Italy: ‘I don’t know why. I saw her and killed her’ — Malian migrant confesses to murder of Sharon Verzeni

A man arrested on Thursday on suspicion of stabbing to death an Italian woman as she took an evening stroll near her home in July this year has confessed to the murder, claiming he had no idea why he attacked his victim.

Moussa Sangare, the 31-year-old Italian citizen born to Malian immigrants, admitted stabbing 33-year-old Sharon Verzeni four times on a small street, Terno d’Isola, in Bergamo, in the early hours of July 30 this year.

Sharon had decided to take a late-night walk while her partner slept when she was accosted by Sangare who stabbed her three times in the back and once in the chest — an attack her autopsy revealed was rapid and which left her no time to react.

As her attacker fled, Sharon managed to call the emergency services to tell them, “He stabbed me,” but died shortly after her transfer to the hospital.

A widescale search for Sharon’s killer took place last month, with the Italian authorities particularly interested in the identity of a man caught on CCTV footage fleeing the vicinity of the murder on a bicycle.

That man was later identified as Sangare who was arrested last week and admitted to the murder.

“Tonight, at the end of very intense investigations, we were able to identify the gentleman on the bicycle who during the night first made spontaneous statements and then made a full confession,” Bergamo’s deputy prosecutor Maria Cristina Rota told the press.

During his police interview, Sangare claimed to have “had a sudden fit” which prompted him to attack Sharon — a woman he had never met and had no prior knowledge of.

“I can’t explain why it happened, I saw her and I killed her”, Sangare told the police.

However, the local prosecutor’s office claimed the killer left his house equipped with four knives, leading them to believe the attack was premeditated.

“The aim was obvious, he wanted to hurt someone,” said Rota, who revealed that his statements to the police led to the recovery of his clothes worn that evening along with several knives unused in the attack, and crucially, the recovery of another knife buried near the Adda River the prosecutor believes is the murder weapon.

“We believe this based on the length and width of the blade, which is compatible with the wounds found by the medical examiner on the body,” the deputy prosecutor told journalists.

The investigation also found that two minors, aged 15 and 16, had been threatened by Sangare with a knife just moments before the murder. Rota explained how the killer Sangare “gave up with the two kids and then met Verzeni who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The suspect, of Malian origin, lived just five kilometers from the crime scene in Suisio. He was unemployed and had no criminal record.

During a search of his property, police officers found a cardboard cutout the size of an adult human which had been used as a practice board for throwing knives.

Following the confession, a statement from Sharon’s family conveyed their relief that the killer had been apprehended and would be brought to justice.

“The news relieves us and also sweeps away all the speculations that have been made about Sharon’s life,” it read.

The killer’s lawyer has suggested the existence of a psychiatric illness that, if medically substantiated, could see Sangare avoid prison and be sent to a psychiatric facility.

“It is very likely that there is a psychiatric problem, even if it is premature and will be a topic to be explored further with consultancy and a possible request for an expert opinion, but this is still a very relevant aspect,” explained lawyer Giacomo Maj.

Acted ‘on behalf of Allah’: In the German city of Darmstadt, an Afghan tried to kill numerous people with his car by driving with the intention of running amok

A road rage incident in Darmstadt on Monday may have an Islamist background. The driver, who is said to have ignored several red lights and also tried to run over passers-by, said after his arrest that he had acted ‘on the orders of Allah’, reports the newspaper Die Welt.

According to the report, the 24-year-old driver of the rampage is an Afghan with a German passport. The migrant is said to have been driving a BMW car at excessive speed, according to the police. ‘According to witnesses, he also drove off the road and through red lights. Fortunately, passers-by were able to react quickly and get to safety.’ He then rammed into a Skoda, seriously injuring a 29-year-old. ‘As a deliberate act cannot be ruled out at present, the Hessian State Office of Criminal Investigation has taken over the further investigation, which is currently being conducted in all directions,’ said the security authorities. However, they did not mention the Afghan’s religious statements.

It is currently being investigated whether the driver of the rampage was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. There are also indications that the man could be suffering from a mental disorder, reports Die Welt.

The Deep State Church – Cardinal Cupich supports the Vatican-UN alliance

When confronted with the chance to issue a moral challenge to some of the country’s most powerful politicians recently, one of the nation’s most influential Catholic figures failed.

Cardinal Blase Cupich, the Catholic archbishop of Chicago, gave the invocation at the Democrats’ national convention Aug. 19 while one of Planned Parenthood’s mobile clinics provided free abortions less than two miles from the convention site, Chicago’s United Center.

Yet Cupich said nothing.

Conservative Catholics expressed outrage. Note the highlighted sections of the following comments.

“Cardinal Cupich missed a clear opportunity last night to condemn their vile, murderous policies and, in effect, betrayed the vibrant pro-life community that he once aligned himself with in our state, said Mary Kate Zander, executive director of Illinois Right to Life.”

“(N)owhere in his invocation did Cardinal Cupich offer the slightest challenge to the perverse ideology that ruled the Democratic convention,” said Phil Lawler, editor of the website Catholic Culture.

But Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, former papal nuncio to the United States, provided the most stunning — and accurate — explanation. Cupich’s silence reflects “the blood pact between the globalist deep state and the Bergoglian deep church,” Vigano wrote on Twitter/X.

As one of Pope Francis’ ideological lackeys, Cupich vigorously supports the pope’s agenda of deemphasizing abortion in favor of environmental sustainability, unlimited immigration and economic redistribution. Francis’ positions demonstrate the Vatican’s support for the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, which reflects the Holy See’s commitment for six decades to globalist, materialist utopianism, as Front Page Magazine often reported.

Two episodes in the past five years illustrate Cupich’s role. In 2019, as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops was discussing a supplement to their voting guide, Cupich tried introducing an amendment to oppose another insisting that abortion remain “our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself.”

Cupich wanted to include a paragraph from one of Francis’ apostolic exhortations, which warned Catholics about behaving as if “the only thing that counts is one particular ethical issue or cause that they themselves defend,” it stated. The cardinal added that Francis wants to ensure “that we do not make one issue that a political party or group puts forward (preeminent) to the point where we’re going to ignore all the rest of them,” he said.

The bishops became divided on how to phrase the proposed amendment, with Cupich insisting they include the paragraph verbatim. Eventually, the bishops voted against it.

Some bishops “noted that Cupich has a regular habit of calling for greater use of the pope’s texts in conference documents,” reported Catholic News Agency. “One bishop called this habit ‘obsequious.’ ”

Two years later, Cupich simply ignored his fellow bishops.

In the wake of Joe Biden’s 2021 inauguration, the cardinal criticized the USCCB’s public opposition to Biden’s support for abortion.

“For the nation’s bishops, the continued injustice of abortion remains the ‘preeminent priority,’ ” Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, the USCCB’s president, wrote in a statement issued on Inauguration Day. “Abortion is a direct attack on life that also wounds the woman and undermines the family.”

“Rather than impose further expansions of abortion and contraception, as he has promised, I am hopeful that the new President and his administration will work with the Church and others of good will … to address the complicated cultural and economic factors that are driving abortion and discouraging families.”

Cupich called Gomez’s statement “ill-considered,” he said. “Aside from the fact that there is seemingly no precedent for doing so, the statement, critical of President Biden, came as a surprise to many bishops, who received it just hours before it was released.”

The Jesuit magazine America called the cardinal’s response “a rare public rebuke…from one of its members.”

Cupich’s behavior reflects Francis’ own priorities. Despite his rhetoric, which included equating abortion to “hiring a hitman,” the pope’s actions demonstrate his willingness to sacrifice the church’s historic opposition to his geopolitical agenda, as Front Page Magazine reported.

The worst example came in 2021. Cardinal Luis Ladaria, the Vatican’s head of doctrine at the time, basically asked American bishops to ignore canon law and allow elected officials who support abortion to receive communion. Those officials include two of Francis’ favorites: Biden and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker.

“It would be misleading,” Ladaria wrote, “to give the impression that abortion and euthanasia alone constitute the only grave matters of Catholic moral and social teaching that demand the fullest level of accountability on the part of Catholics.”

Ladaria even used the term “pro-choice” to describe abortion advocates.

In 2017, Francis honored Emma Bonino for her work with African refugees. Bonino, a left-wing activist who served in the Italian and European parliaments, performed illegal abortions in Italy and supported legalizing abortion. Yet the pope ranked her “among the greats of today’s Italy.”

Last year, the Vatican offered a tepid response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade through L’Osservatore Romano, its official newspaper.

“The protection and defense of human life is not an issue that cannot remain confined to the exercise of individual rights but instead is a matter of broad social significance,” the editorial read. “It is a question of developing political choices that promote conditions of existence in favor of life without falling into a priori ideological positions. This also means ensuring adequate sexual education, guaranteeing health care accessible to all and preparing legislative measures to protect the family and motherhood, overcoming existing inequalities … .” (Emphasis added.)

Francis’ Twitter account at the time not only failed to mention the Supreme Court’s decision. It made no mention of abortion at all.

Perhaps Francis chose not to embarrass one of his closest advisors: Columbia Economics Professor Jeffrey Sachs, who wrote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. In his bookCommon Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet, Sachs called abortion is “a lower-cost option” to prevent the birth of “unwanted children.”

Why would Francis make such a man an advisor? Because five decades before he became pope in 2013, the Vatican embraced globalist, materialist utopianism at the Second Vatican Council, as Front Page Magazine reported.

Three papal encyclicals — John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris (1963), Paul VI’s Populorum Progressio (1967) and Benedict XVI’s Caritas in Veritate (2009) — reinforced each other with increasing detail. John called for “a public authority with power” to ensure “the means necessary for the proper development of life, particularly food, clothing, shelter, medical care, rest, and, finally, the necessary social services,” he wrote. Such an organization, Paul added, ultimately would create “a new juridical order.”

Benedict took those concepts to their logical extents, as Front Page reported. He advocated creating an authority “with teeth” that would “manage the global economy … to bring about integral and timely disarmament, food security and peace, to guarantee the protection of the environment and to regulate migration,” he wrote. If the UN could not undertake such responsibilities, Benedict argued, a new organization must replace it.

Benedict’s “true world political authority,” he wrote, would use its comprehensive power “to ensure compliance from all parties,” thereby eliminating the nation-state. The agency’s ultimate goal, he added, would be to govern a “directed” global economy that would “open up the unprecedented possibility of large-scale redistribution of wealth on a world-wide scale,” he wrote.

Benedict’s goals match the UN’s Agenda 2030.

In 2015 at the United Nations, Francis called Agenda 2030 “an important sign of hope.” Four years later at a Vatican conference, the pope described the plan as “a great step forward for global dialogue, marking a vitally ‘new and universal solidarity,’ “ he said while quoting from Laudato Si, his encyclical on the environment.

So what does all this have to do with abortion?

Agenda 2030 lists “Gender Equality” as one of the goals. But the UN’s definition contradicts historic Catholic teaching on abortion and birth control. The six targets for meeting that goal include securing “universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights.” That means “adolescent girls and young women aged 15-19” should “make their own informed decisions regarding sexual relations, contraceptive use and reproductive health care.”

Not for nothing does Sachs, the author of those sustainability goals and a papal advisor, support abortion.

Not for nothing did Cupich fail to address the issue at the Democrats’ convention. With the Vatican willing to destroy its own moral credibility for the sake of a utopian globalist agenda he supports, why would he?

Leaked letter reveals infighting at top of Austria’s Social Democratic Party

Andreas Babler. Screen grab youtube

Less than four weeks before the general election on September 29, Austria’s Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) is in crisis mode.

In late August a newspaper published an internal letter sent by party heavyweight Doris Bures to the SPÖ’s Presidium – a body comprising the party’s 11 most influential members.

In that, Bures – who is vice president of the Austrian Parliament – complained about the party’s electoral programme, insinuating that it lacked seriousness and undermined the credibility of the SPÖ.

The critique of the programme – which has so far not been officially published – was widely seen as a direct attack on the man responsible for it, Andreas Babler. He became the SPÖ’s leader in November 2023 and is its candidate for Federal Chancellor in the upcoming elections.

Babler, mayor of Traiskirchen, south of Vienna, and a self-declared Marxist, has steered the SPÖ further towards left-wing populism. His demands include rent control, a four-day workweek and a “basic income” for children of €400 per month paid by the State. He is also perceived as very lenient on asylum and migration.

Bures wrote that while many of the demands in the programme “sounded nice’” there was no way most of them would be put into practice. She further complained that the SPÖ’s claims that the programme had been adopted on a “broad internal democratic basis” were not true.

In the wake of the leak, Bures and Babler told Austrian media that they had talked their differences over but the letter revealed deep frictions that have plagued the SPÖ ever since it fell from power in the federal government seven years ago.

Babler narrowly won a contentious vote for the party leadership in 2023 against Hans Peter Doskozil, governor of the Burgenland region. As opposed to Babler’s pro-migration stance, Doskozil demanded a more migration-critical approach. He was first reported as the winner of the vote with 53 per cent, but the next day the SPÖ announced there had been an ‘Excel mixup’ and in fact Babler was the winner.

Insiders therefore assumed it was Doskozil who leaked the letter to the press, which damaged both Babler and his other internal rival Michael Ludwig, Mayor of Vienna, who was seen as the man behind Bures.

The letter affair is just one of several recent crises for the SPÖ. In late August, Klaus Luger, SPÖ mayor of Austria’s third-largest city Linz, had to resign from all offices after admitting that he secretly passed on interview questions to his favoured candidate for the artistic director of Linz’ main concert hall prior to the interview.

In the elections on September 29, the SPÖ is expected to perform poorly. The latest poll by OGM/Kurier puts it in third place, behind the Freedom Party (FPÖ) and the People’s Party (ÖVP), with only 21 per cent of the vote. In the last federal elections in 2019, the party received 21.2 per cent of the vote – its worst result ever.

France: Sexual assaults, insults, Islamic religious statements about modesty … The doctor Abdelhalim H. from the Joseph Ducuing hospital, who was already convicted of sexual assault in 2021 … again in court, accused by 7 patients

‘Touching, forced kisses, insults”: Is the emergency doctor at the Ducuing hospital in Toulouse a ‘Dr Mabuse’? Doctor Abdelhalim H. goes on trial in Toulouse on Tuesday, the 3rd of September 2024. Seven patients are accusing him of sexual assault in the course of his professional activities. (…)

We are in the spring of 2020 and Sylviane* has been treated at the Joseph Ducuing hospital after suffering a concussion. She told the police about the inappropriate behaviour of the doctor at the facility who examined her: ‘He held me in his arms, touched my private parts and then came to my house.’ Isolated act or unhealthy habit? The investigators quickly form their own opinion.

A few days later, Imane, who had also come to file a complaint, described a strangely similar scenario. The emergency doctor Abdelhalim H. stroked her thigh while explaining to her mother that her dress was not compliant during Ramadan. An investigation is launched and more complaints follow: Cathy, who is listened to, speaks of her nipples ‘which he touched’; there is also this young transgender man whose buttocks are groped by the practitioner. Or Malika, whose breasts the doctor ‘palpated for minutes’ before rubbing her abdomen.

In police custody and at the hearings before the investigating judge, the defendant denies or trivialises everything. In his opinion, the plaintiffs partly lied and partly misinterpreted purely medical measures. (…)

Most of the victims came to the emergency room at night because they had recently suffered pain or trauma, which left them in a weak position in relation to the authority figure embodied by the doctor.

He was finally convicted on April 1, 2021 of sexual harassment ‘ committed by a person who abuses the authority conferred on him by his function’, the incident having occurred in Villefranche-de-Rouergue in 2015. The court in Carcassonne also convicted him in 2012 for harassment to obtain sexual favours. These incidents were not considered by the Languedoc-Roussillon Medical Council to be grounds for appropriate punishment. (…)

When questioned as part of the judicial enquiry opened in Toulouse on December 17, 2020, the management of the Ducuing hospital confirmed internal proceedings against Abdelhalim H., none of which had led to a sanction. (…) The now 65-year-old doctor was the only emergency doctor to take on numerous shifts, including at night (…).  La Dépêche

Far-Left Extremists Protest in Germany Following Right-Wing AfD’s Election Victories in Saxony and Thuringia on Sunday

Far-left extremists protested on Sunday night in Dresden, Germany following the election victories by the AfD party in Saxony and Thuringia.

The radical left has a long history of violence and assault on AfD candidates in Germany – this comes after years of the far left media smearing the moderate German party.

In 2019 Antifa took responsibility for the attempted assassination of an AfD party leader.

The elite media attacks have led to several assaults on AfD members in recent years by the radical left. The Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft spoke with one of the top AfD politicians in October about the brutal attacks on AfD members.

The far left in Germany are already threatening violence following the AfD victories. This could be a very dangerous period for the AfD Party. This is a party full of strong men and women. They will not bend.

India:  Muslim man burns Quran and accepts Hinduism gets arrested

Accused Imran; Image- Super Live News

On September 1, Sunday, a Muslim man identified as Imran was arrested by the police for burning a copy of the Quran in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh and supporting Ramgiri Maharaj. The man posted his video of burning the Quran on social media, raising the hackles of the Muslim community.

As per the reports, the members of the Muslim community rushed to the police station after watching the video and demanded the arrest of the accused. The police filed an FIR in the case and arrested Imran. They have also stated that stern action will be taken against him.

The complaint in the case has been filed by Shahid, a councillor from Ward 24 in Shikarpur, Bulandshahr district, against the accused Imran at the Shikarpur police station.

He stated that on September 1st, Imran, a resident of Mohalla Ganj Sadat, shared a video on social media. “In the viral video, Imran is seen burning the Quran Sharif, Islam’s sacred book. He is also making inappropriate comments about Islam. This has infuriated Muslims. Imran, the accused, should face serious consequences,” he said. Based on the complaint, the police have filed an FIR against the accused Imran under sections 192, 299, 302, and 353 of the IPC.

The FIR copy filed in the case mentioned that the accused had hurt the religious sentiments of the Muslim community. Imran, in the video, indicated that Islam was never a peaceful religion and that the people following it were committing a mistake. “Quran suggests to murder Kafirs, it promotes teen talakh and halal practices which lead to disrespecting women. Also, Sharia allows the marriage of a 9-year-old girl just because Paigamber Mohammed did it. Is this justice? Many today are raping minors, abusing them. How can people snatch the childhood of minors? There’s no equality in Islam,” the accused said.

He further added that whatever Swami Ramgiri Maharaj said was all correct. “Mohammed Paigamber has promoted all the wrong things. I agree I don’t know complete Islam but I have the guts to call out wrongdoings which these Maulanas and Muftis can’t do. I am just burning away this book. What these people have done to Bangladeshi Hindus is also wrong. Further, these Muslims are yelling slogans of ‘Sar Tan Se Juda’ against Swami Ramgiri Maharaj who spoke for Bangladeshi Hindus. These Muslims eliminated the context in which Swami Ramgiri Maharaj said and accused him of blasphemy. I am against all this, committing this act and accepting Sanatan Dharma. The video of the incident was posted by Super Live News and the statements quoted above have been published by Super Live News quoting accused Imran from the viral video.

In the given case, the UP Police is said to have responded quickly to arrest Imran. The mobs that bayed for Imran’s blood have hailed the police for arresting the accused. SP Rural Rohit Mishra commented on the matter and confirmed that a video of the burning Quran Sharif has gone viral.

“The complaint was submitted by Shahid, a Shikarpur resident. Based on Shahid’s accusation, an FIR has been filed against the accused Imran under serious sections. Imran, the accused, has been arrested. There is peace in the area,” he said.

Who created victorious AfD and BSW? Merkel and her mates, deaf to the people

The German author Jakob Nolte wrote in one of his novels that things that kill you by either “peng peng” or “bla bla.” Even though in Germany (and other places in Western Europe) the correct version would be “stab stab” instead of “peng peng,” yesterday’s regional elections are indicating that the German people had enough of both. Two former states of East Germany, Saxony and Thuringia, voted overwhelmingly against the parties of the federally ruling “traffic light coalition” — Social Democrats, Greens and liberal Free Democrats — demonstrating that they no longer trust Chancellor Scholz’s and Vice Chancellor Habeck’s “bla bla” on any issue of importance.

The ruling parties and their acolytes in the legacy media tried everything they could to swing the election in their favour. The German weekly Der Spiegel was running cover after cover depicting Germany on the brink of falling to the Nazis or a Fascist takeover. Companies that are considering leaving the country due to the disastrous economic policies of the current government all of a sudden jumped gears, telling people to vote for the very parties that are making Germany once again the economic sick man of Europe. They campaigned that “Made in Germany” also meant “Made by Diversity.” These are the same companies, by the way, which claimed that the refugee wave of 2015 was “as an opportunity to help companies grow and ensure long-term prosperity.”

Yet, as the Financial Times reported, three years after over a million migrants came to Germany, top companies only employed 54 refugees. As Abraham Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.” In Eastern Germany, we are beginning to see the third stage of that aphorism. Being told that turning off functioning nuclear power plants will make energy cheaper, how more and more migrants from entirely different cultures will make Germany better, and, ultimately, that anyone who disagrees with the Left-Green agenda is a Nazi, simply was too much.

The current federal government in Berlin of the three-party coalition were absolutely clobbered by the voters. In Saxony and Thuringia, the Free Democrats did not even clear the five per cent threshold, meaning they are no longer part of the regional parliament. The Greens and Social Democrats together got just 12.5 per cent in Saxony and in Thuringia, only the Social Democrats got over five per cent with a meagre 6.1 per cent.

Only the supposedly conservative Christian Democrats could make gains or avoid significant loses, coming in first in Saxony with 31.9 per cent of the vote (-0.2 percentage points) and second in Thuringia with 23.6 per cent (+1.9). Yet this is no reason for celebration, because the absolute winners of the night were the anti-establishment newcomers on both the Right and the Left. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now the undisputed leading party in Thuringia with 32.8 per cent (+9.4) and a very close second in Saxony (30.6 per cent, a plus of 3.1 percentage points). The other surprise was the recently formed Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) a left-wing version of the AfD founded by the namesake of the party after she left the former communist party of “Die Linke” (The Left). In her first electoral test, Wagenknecht led her party to almost 12 per cent in Saxony and 16 per cent in Thuringia, making BSW the third largest force in the new legislative assemblies.

Most of the media will frame this as a victory of far-right and far-left populists, but that description is missing the point. The true defining quality of these two parties is that they are  anti-establishment, especially on issues like migration and the war in Ukraine, but even more so as representatives of an ever-larger number of ordinary Germans who feel either ignored or despised by the traditional parties. And, to paraphrase Talleyrand, the traditional parties “have learnt nothing, and forgotten nothing.”

Instead of taking the will of the voters seriously, members of the coalition government complain that they have not “communicated clearly enough,” which is their way of saying that the average voter is just too stupid to understand and appreciate the brilliance of people like Olaf Scholz and Robert Habeck. Without their – and Angela Merkel’s – supposed “brilliance” there would not even be an AfD or a BSW. In poll after poll the voters expressed their dissatisfaction with the direction of the country, and a majority of the parties either ignored them or recycled Merkel’s line that their policies – from mass migration to the energy transition – are without an alternative. Instead of taking the voters seriously, they were ignored and, as the great Mark Steyn once wrote, “if the political culture forbids respectable politicians from raising certain issues, voters will turn to unrespectable ones.” In other words, if BSW and AfD are Frankenstein’s monster, the role of Frankenstein is filled by Merkel, Scholz, and Habeck.

You will also hear a lot about how democracy is now under threat, when in truth these elections were a showcase for democracy. Voter participation increased significantly from the mid 60s to over 74 per cent, making the strong performance of the AfD and the BSW all the more significant. These were not the results brought on by an electorate that rejects democracy, but one that decided to participate in its process. The hubris of the Greens, the Social Democrats, an the Merkel “Conservatives” that only votes for them are democratic votes reveals the totalitarian mindset of which they accuse the AfD. What saved the CDU in these elections were civil servants and voters over 60, because in the age groups 18 to 59 the AfD was dominating.

Eastern Germany’s Gen Z is moving towards either the anti-establishment Right or the anti-establishment Left, but they are done with the traditional parties. In doing so, they also ended the myth of the Greens being the party of youth. That ship sailed a long time ago. The future looks bright for anti-establishment movements, and based on the reaction during election night it looks as if the former mainstream parties will only double down on their failed strategies. They will cling to the illusion that the parties that got less than five per cent are the “centre” while those that got over 30 per cent are the “fringe.” Good luck with that.

Germany: After being widely mocked, Berlin police drop recommendation to ‘sing’ if you face a knife attacker

As knife crime becomes more of an “everyday” part of life in Germany, more and more people are concerned about how they should respond if they are attacked or threatened with a knife. The Berlin police’s tip to “sing loudly” has now been dropped from their website after being widely mocked on X.

“A screenshot of our homepage has been circulating for a few days, according to which we recommend that in the event of an attack, you irritate the perpetrator through unexpected behavior, such as singing,” write Berlin’s police. However, they then go on to write that they have removed this advice from their website.

“This is recommended by the professional associations for psychiatry, among others. However, this advice does not correspond to our police experience and has therefore no longer been part of our recommendations since 2023. The flyer was already updated, now our website is too.”

However, the “tip” also sparked broad coverage in the German media, with Berliner Zeitung writing in response to the advice, “What sounds like a bad joke is actually meant seriously. The police give Berliners tips on how to deal with violent situations on their website and write that ‘statistically speaking, many will never get into” such a situation. On the other hand, 48,200 physical assaults were recorded last year, the highest number in 10 years, which reduces many people’s sense of security.”

Some users on X questioned why the advice was not taken down earlier, considering the police already knew since 2023 that this tip did not work.

Nevertheless, there is increasing interest from the public about how to respond to knife attacks in the wake of data showing that there are now 10 knife attacks in Berlin per day. Just last week, a mother of four was brutally murdered outside her home by her ex-husband, a Lebanese national thought to have connections with the clan gang scene.

According to Berlin police, 3,482 knife attacks were recorded in the city last year. In 918 cases, people were seriously injured. Over half of the suspects, 53.5 percent, did not have a German passport. Only 25 percent of Berliners do not have German citizenship, showing the disproportionately high role of foreigners in such crimes. In addition, the data shows that 16 percent of the “German” suspects have a dual passport. Even those German suspects with only a German passport, many of them have a foreign background through their parents or grandparents.

A Berlin prosecutor, for example, stated that 75 percent of clan gang members actually have citizenship, which means every time they commit a crime, it is recorded as “German.”

In general, those facing a knife attack should remain as calm as possible, draw attention to the attacker, from others in the area, such as saying, “Careful, you have a knife there.” Most importantly, create distance between you and the attacker and look for potential escape routes.

Germans vote in state elections set to hand victory to rightwing AfD party

Populist anti-mass migration parties made significant gains in state elections in Germany on Sunday, with the right-wing Alternative for Germany projected to have secured a resounding victory in Thuringia.

Exit polls for the east German state of Thuringia have put the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) out on top, with a projected 30.5 per cent of the vote, beating out the neo-liberal centrist Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party formerly led by Chancellor Angela Merkel at 24.5 per cent.

Should the exit polls prove true, it would mark the first time that the AfD was the winner in a state election in Germany.

Separately, in the state of Saxony, the AfD is in a tight race for the top with the CDU, with exit polls projecting the centrist party to have won 31.5 per cent of the vote, compared to 30 per cent for the AfD, broadcaster DW reports.

However, given the slim divide between the two parties, it is still possible that the populist party may yet squeak out a victory in Saxony as well.

Hailing the success of her party, AfD co-leader Alice Weidel said that her party should be involved in the state governments, pushing back against reported plans by other parties to band together to block the populists from entering government.

“Under normal circumstances, in order to stick to the customs in this country, the strongest party is exploring, and that is the AfD,” Weidel said referring to Thuringia. “The voters want the AfD to be involved in a government. We have 30 per cent of the voters in both federal states, and without us, a stable government is no longer possible.”

Meanwhile, left-wing populist Sahra Wagenknecht’s eponymous party is projected to have cracked double digits in both states, currently forecast to have won 12.5 per cent in Thuringia and 12 per cent in Saxony. The good results for her upstart party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), demonstrate the appeal of anti-mass migration policies on both the left and right-wing ends of German politics.

Sahra Wagenknecht, formerly of The Left party, formed her own party earlier this year after disagreements with her previous party members on issues such as lockdowns, vaccine mandates, the war in Ukraine, and mass migration. Arguing from a left-wing perspective Wagenknecht has criticised mass migration for undercutting the working class of Germany and draining state resources.

While many of her key policies are similar to those espoused by the AfD, Wagenknecht has so far ruled out partnering with the right-wing party, and this week accused the AfD’s lead candidate in Thuringia, Björn Höcke, of holding “Nazi ideology”.

The results for Wagenknecht’s upstart party will likely put her in a position to challenge more meaningfully in next year’s federal elections. Just a few months old, her party already surpassed the Social Democrats of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, which are projected to have only managed to win 7 per cent of the vote in Thuringia and 8.5 per cent in Saxony.
