How Ireland Has Become an Authoritarian State

“Address by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at a Joint Sitting of Dáil & Seanad Éireann in Leinster House on the 6th April 2022.” by Houses of the Oireachtas from Ireland, CC BY-SA 2.0.

The remarkable thing about Ireland is not just the authoritarian nature of its government, but the fact that this is largely unopposed. There exists a uniformity between government, opposition, government-organised non-governmental organisations (GONGOs), and mainstream media. This has led to an alignment of the various sources of power where there should be checks and balances between them.

The political consensus has come about because the political parties Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have, at leadership level, adopted left-wing positions on every issue. While these parties used to possess socially conservative and/or economically liberal ideas, and continue to retain members who hold such views, they have funded GONGOs indistinguishable from left-wing activists over the last 30 years.

These organisations serve as quasi-official advisory groups, their various causes helped along by the tax-funded, far-left propaganda broadcaster, Radió Telefís Éireann (RTÉ). While these parties created and support these GONGOs, they are also browbeaten into embracing the ever more radical policies which these organisations demand, particularly because of propagandising by RTÉ.

RTÉ is known to have been controlled by Marxist activists since at least the early ‘80s and, among other things, broadcasts the cultural Marxist culture of California to a captive audience. These parties have also introduced the state-funding of political parties, which has turned them into branches of the state. These tax-funded parties, GONGOs, and RTÉ now exist independently of any accountability to the public.

Within the Irish parliament (Dáil Eireann) there are now three distinct ideological blocs. The first is composed of the three current government parties: Fine Gael, Fiánna Fail, and the Green Party, as well as the three largest opposition parties: Sinn Fein, Labour, and the Social Democrats. This illiberal liberal bloc supports permissiveness, multinational corporations, the European Union, mass immigration, and ‘hate speech’ laws. This bloc encompasses approximately 82% of the Irish parliament if one includes backbenchers who will ultimately follow their party whip.

The second bloc—and main opposition to the first—are the sixteen members of parliament found among three opposition caucuses, who are either independents or in the Áontu or Independent Ireland parties. This patriotic, pro-family  bloc favours the family, small and medium enterprises, a welfare state that distinguishes between deserving and undeserving recipients, and opposes crime and mass immigration. This bloc encompasses 13% of the Irish parliament. The third parliamentary bloc is composed of the Solidarity-People Before Profit party and a few like-minded independents. These make up approximately 5% of Dail Eireann.

The illiberal liberals are supported by the mainstream media such as RTÉ, the Irish Times and the Irish Independent, while the family-patriots are supported by Gript Media. The main hostility in Irish politics is not to be found among the fake alternative parties within the illiberal liberal bloc but rather between it and the family-patriot bloc. This can be seen in the mainstream hostility towards Gript Media.

This real division in Irish politics was demonstrated in the recent referendums pertaining to the family and to care, during which the illiberal liberals in government and opposition all supported the proposed amendments while the family-patriots provided the sole opposition.

The consensus within the first group can be seen in all major policy areas such as having high taxation and high public spending, mass immigration, and permissive social policy. What matters is not which of the mainstream government or opposition parties are in office but rather the growth of a real opposition. The mainstream parties do not represent or even purport to represent the Irish people but rather the interests of GONGOs, multinational corporations, the EU, and the U.S. government. Decisions are therefore done to—rather than on behalf of—the Irish people.

Expressions of opposition from the public are ignored and will now be suppressed by means of the new ‘hate speech’ bill, which will criminalise the expression or possession of facts or opinions with which the government disagrees. The impending Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill will, based on a list of “protected characteristics,” criminalise inciting “hatred” against persons or groups; preparing or possessing material thereto; or condoning, denying, or grossly trivialising genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes. Controversially, the bill has self-referential and nebulous definitions of “hatred” and “gender.”

The general tenets of the bill are the transposition of EU law—Council Framework Decision 2008/913/JHA. Additional elements have been added by Ireland’s extremely illiberal Justice Minister Helen McEntee, such as that if a person possesses material that is deemed likely to incite violence or hatred, they will be presumed to be in breach of the law unless they can prove their innocence. Another provision stipulates that a private citizen will be required to give a police officer the password to their computer on request.

This bill entails the emergence of an openly totalitarian government which views the public as serfs. The state realised during the COVID lockdowns that many Irishmen are spiritless people who will believe the crudest propaganda and who welcome their own servitude. A state which criminalises the expression of opposition to its authoritarianism leaves available to the public only direct action.

There will likely be more riots in opposition to government policy, particularly in relation to mass immigration during the current housing crisis. The Irish political and media establishment are so self-absorbed and self-entitled that they demonise any right-wing government that is elected anywhere in the West as being authoritarian and unacceptable, while priding themselves on how progressive they are notwithstanding their own authoritarianism.

Ireland endured among the most draconian restrictions in the world during the COVID panic. This was in spite of the fact—or perhaps because—it had among the highest rates of vaccination in the world. It was clear that the more people acquiesced to restrictions on their liberty the more restrictions there would be, and this was what then happened. These draconian measures were not opposed by the main opposition parties, who only complained that the restrictions were not even more severe.

Likewise, there is total unanimity in support of the Ukrainian war effort, with a seeming ignorance of the fact that this is a U.S. proxy war and despite the strain that hosting upwards of 100,000 Ukrainians has placed on the country. Irish politicians and media are remarkably uneducated which produces a self-absorbed class which knows just what to think about everything, so long as these thoughts are wrongheaded. From global warming to COVID lockdowns, and from mass immigration to the Ukrainian war, the political and media class invariably adopt and promote the next big thing.

Ireland has thus become, in effect, an authoritarian one-ideology state, enforced by a media-controlled government, and devoid of serious parliamentary opposition. Lacking the consent of the governed, it remains to be seen what will be the outcome of this confrontation between an increasingly authoritarian state and a supposedly freedom-loving citizenry.

‘For Palestine!’ — Man arrested for kidnap and rape of Jewish woman in France

Nosta Lgia

A suspect was arrested in France on Sunday accused of kidnapping and raping a Jewish woman he met on a dating app in an act of revenge for Israeli military action in Gaza.

The man was detained by authorities at a residence in the northwest Parisian suburb of Gennevilliers on Sunday morning and remains in police custody.

The Nanterre public prosecutor’s office confirmed it was leading an “investigation for acts of kidnapping, sequestration, rape, and death threats.”

According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, the Jewish victim called her mother on Sunday morning to tell her she had been kidnapped and was being held captive in a Paris apartment. The perpetrator is allegedly a man she met on a dating app about a week prior to the incident, according to a police source.

The suspect reportedly sent text messages from the victim’s phone to her mother in which he wrote, “Good luck. You will never find your daughter again, you will never see her again. I will prostitute your daughter.”

Another message was sent to the victim’s former boyfriend in which the man claimed he wanted to “avenge Palestine,” referring to the ongoing conflict between the proscribed terror organization, Hamas, and the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip.

Police managed to identify the apartment where the victim was being held and conducted a successful rescue mission.

The victim was tended to by emergency responders but was considered to be in good health. It is understood she had been raped.

Little has been reported about the identity of the suspect — his name and nationality are not yet known. French media revealed he had been working as an employee of RATP, the Parisian public transport network.

The investigation is ongoing.

Globalist Pope Francis Gives His First US TV Interview, so MSM Uses Him To Help Push Climate Alarmism Into Overdrive

It is said that ‘even a broken clock is right twice a day.’ By that, we infer that, due to some statistical oddity, even people who are consistently wrong can sometimes be right.

This applies to Globalist Pope Francis, who is famously wrong in a vast number of issues, but every now and then is able to land one for the right team.

Just some three weeks ago, Pope Francis did something unusual, and issued a declaration called ‘Dignitas Infinita’, in which he strongly defended the Catholic Church’s dogma and doctrine without trying to ‘improve’ or ‘modernize’ it.

He dealt with a dozen contemporary issues through the lens of scripture and church teaching, including abortion, human trafficking, poverty, euthanasia, and the death penalty, among others.

IS terrorist demands 144,000 euros to leave Germany

The ex-IS terrorist is currently fighting against his prison conditions at the local court in Regensburg. Wikimedia Commons , Johanning, CC-BY-SA-3.0

A former IS supporter who spent more than five years in prison for planning terrorist attacks in Germany caused a stir yesterday at the Regensburg Administrative Court. The 36-year-old Abdulhadi B. is fighting against his prison conditions and made an unusual offer to the Free State’s lawyers during a break in the proceedings: “If I go, then voluntarily and only if I get 144,000 euros from you,” he said. The proceedings against Abdulhadi B. started when the judiciary learnt of his terrorist activities after he had stood trial for an attack on his girlfriend. He was finally sentenced to more than five years in prison by the Munich Higher Regional Court in 2018. The charges were publicity for IS, attempted incitement to manslaughter and assault. The Federal Court of Justice confirmed the judgement a year later. In addition that he recruited suicide bombers, he also planned an explosives attack and the recruitment of a seven-year-old boy as a child soldier.

Abdulhadi B. is now defending himself in court against the conditions imposed on him, including not leaving Tirschenreuth and not using any internet-enabled devices. He argues that he was wrongly convicted and is demanding compensation for his time in prison. The Syrian sees himself as a victim and is prepared to leave Germany if he receives the sum demanded. A decision on his claim has not yet been made and his efforts in court have so far been unsuccessful. Deportation to Syria is out of the question for the German authorities due to the ongoing conflicts and the insecure situation in the country.

René Dierkes, legal policy spokesperson for the AfD, comments negatively on the case: “This case clearly shows why the deportation policy of the traditional parties is failing. The Syrian terrorist, who seems to be quite sure of his ideology, is confronted with a completely effeminate state that even allows the debate about terror alimentation to take place in court. These embarrassments must be stopped”. With a ” reasonable remigration policy”, this person would never have arrived in Germany or would have been “immediately remigrated”, Dierkes told FREILICH magazine.

Dutch province of Utrecht returns to fossil fuel as power-grid faces meltdown

D66 leader and Dutch minister of Climate and Energy Rob Jetten campaigning on ‘new energy’ in the elections of november 2023.

The Dutch province of Utrecht announced it will switch back to fossil fuel to relieve the overworked electricity grid, as the road to net-zero in the Netherlands hits some major obstacles.

The outgoing Dutch Climate Minister Rob Jetten, leader of the Democrats 66 (D66) party, along with local grid operators, announced a set of measures to fight the power-grid overload in Utrecht province. It is expected to be the first of many regions in the country that will have to take action to avoid future problems.

To maintain electricity provision to the public and businesses in Utrecht, there will be a switch back to gas. At moments of peak demand, the local Government will deploy gas generators.

Smart charging stations will be switched off during peak times but the regional authorities and grid operators are working on an exemption option for owners of electric vehicles to top-up their batteries if they need to.

Instead of fully-electric heat-pumps, hybrid heat-pumps are being promoted. These hybrid models can be connected to boiler-heating systems and are less demanding on the electricity grid.

The Dutch public service broadcaster nos reported that the projected shortage equals the needs of 125,000 homes in Utrecht.

Huib van Essen of the Utrecht Provincial Executive said the measures would “have a significant impact on reducing the overload on the power grid”, adding that the use of gas-plants was “unfortunately necessary” for this.

Without implementing appropriate measures, the province is forecast to experience frequent electricity blackouts, which would jeopardise the construction of new housing and industrial complexes, nos said.

Utrecht is the first province to opt to return to fossil fuels but other areas and provinces, in particular Flevopolder and Gelderland, are also said to be working on similar measures.

Without nationwide measures being implemented, nos reported that approximately 1.5 million people in the Netherlands could be subject to power outages until 2030.

Other issues would include the malfunction of electrical devices and lighting.

The problems for households and small consumers come on top of long-standing issues for the Dutch industrial sector, which is consuming electricity at much higher rates than previously.

Waiting times for new or upgraded connections, necessary for businesses to enhance their sustainability efforts, are also on the rise.

The shift back to fossil fuels in the Netherlands follows a decision by the Scottish Government to abandon its flagship target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75 per cent by 2030.

It said it had an “unwavering commitment” to achieve net zero by 2045 but on April 18 called the targets for 2030 “out of reach”.

Scotland’s leadership was one of the first in the world to declare a “climate emergency”, in 2019.

Paris Olympics will feature a ‘Pride House’ to ‘celebrate’ homosexual and gender-confused athletes

Nosta Lgia

The upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris will feature a “Pride House” to promote LGBT ideology and “celebrate” homosexual and gender-confused athletes, as well as their supporters.

The segregationist-minded initiative first occurred at the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. It appears to have been a fixture at every Olympics since then in various forms, with the exception of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, due to the country’s ban on LGBT propaganda.

Paris 2024 Executive Team President Tony Estanguet announced on May 17 of last year, the so-called “International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia,” that the games would host the “Pride House.”

“We are convinced that sport changes lives, and that it is also a formidable tool for changing mentalities and contributing to the fight against discrimination,” he remarked, euphemistically referring to opposition to homosexuality and transgenderism.

Estanguet, a former slalom canoeist, has also stated that pro-LGBT athletes will have “plenty of opportunities” to display their beliefs this summer, a signal that rainbow flags may be more prominent at this year’s competition than in the past.

The Olympic website notes that the purpose of the “Pride House” is to “celebrate the LGBTI+ athletes and ensure their visibility with a program of celebratory, cultural, and educational activities throughout the Games period.”

It also says, without irony, that “Pride House is open to everyone who believes in the need for more inclusive sport,” thereby excluding those who do not believe in “more inclusive sport.”

There were at least 36 publicly LGBT-identifying athletes at the 2022 Winter Olympics, according to LGBT website OutSports. At the 2020 Tokyo Summer Games, there were at least 186, an Olympic record.

Partners listed on this year’s Olympics website include mega-corporations like AirBNB, Bridgestone, Coca-Cola, Deloitte, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samson, Toyota, and VISA.

Earlier this month, the games’ first ceremony, a 30-minute-long torch lighting ritual, was held in Greece at the ancient temple of Hera, the wife of Zeus, king of the Greek gods. Flanked by a harem of women, Greek actress Mary Mina played the role of “high priestess” and offered a “prayer” on behalf of mankind to Zeus and Apollo. The performance, which was ridiculed by Christians on social media, seems to have taken place ahead of almost every Olympics since the 1930s.

This year’s games have been billed as the first “gender equal” Olympics. What that means is that men and women will have 50-50 representation in competition. Said another way, there will be the same number of male athletes as there are female athletes.

At the torch lighting ceremony, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach echoed Estanguet’s remarks by observing that this year’s games will be “younger, more inclusive, more urban, more sustainable.”

As with other Olympics, Paris 2024 will likely be a cesspool of impurity. LifeSite has previously reported on the sad fact that fornication is rampant at the gatherings due to free contraceptives being given out at the Olympic Village where athletes stay. This year’s competitions are scheduled to be held from July 26 until August 11 across 16 cities in France.

Biden mocks Catholics by making sign of the cross at abortion rally

Screen shot X

By Monica Showalter

Sometimes, the truth slips out.

Joe Biden holds Catholics and the tenets of their faith in utter contempt.

According to Fox News:

President Biden made the sign of the cross, a gesture Catholics often make before and after prayer, while listening to pro-abortion comments by a fellow Democrat in Florida.

The president’s actions came Tuesday as Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried, the state’s former Democratic gubernatorial nominee, blasted an upcoming law restricting abortion to within six weeks of gestation. Biden was heavily criticized in response to the move, which several Catholic groups and commentators described as sacrilegious given the Catholic Church’s strict teaching condemning abortion.

“And then we come back here to the state of Florida where [Gov.] Ron DeSantis felt like he needed to run for president and so 15 weeks wasn’t good enough. We had to go to six weeks,” Fried said at the event alongside Biden.

At the moment Fried said “15 weeks wasn’t good enough,” Biden made the sign of the cross, appearing to mock Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ efforts to limit abortion.

That’s the man Jen Psaki advised us is a “devout Catholic,” a rosary always jingling in his pocket. He’s gotten away with it up until now. But now he’s gone full frontal with his hatred of authentic Catholics.

The sign of the cross is intended to commemorate Christ’s suffering on the cross and is normally done before and after prayer. Some Central Americans do it before and after entering the house, and some little old Italian ladies do it on every occasion they can think of, but it’s done in reverence, not mockery, not an expression of contempt for a political enemy, which is what Biden’s nasty gesture was, given the remarks from the radical leftist Florida pol which preceded it.

What it shows is that Joe in his anomalous abortion stance, which has yet to cost him anything from his bishops or the pope, is not a live-and-let-live kind of ‘Catholic’ in his support for abortion. He’s not a yes-but cafeteria Catholic. He’s not an against-abortion-personally kind of Catholic.

He’s the kind of person who despises Cathoicism with the kind of contemptuous gesture that has thus far been found only at Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence rallies.

And the lefties of the episcopate here just let it go, insulted in their views on the value of human life by our second “Catholic” president, and insulted for their faith itself.

Because while this does mock Florida’s excellent and popular governor, Ron DeSantis, it also mocks all Catholics who try to live their faith.

I have never seen anything more disgusting come out of this wretched president, ever. He’s gone downhill and gotten extremist in his anti-Catholic policies, suing the Little Sisters of the Poor over whether they should pay insurance for abortion, as well as ignoring all the arson and vandalism attacks on Catholic churches, and now he’s getting even worse.

Nosta Lgia

All I can hope is that Catholics will make it very hard for their wokester Catholic bishops and their silence over this outrage, and Republicans have got the campaign ads already made, because rest assured, this creep will come ’round again, Eddie Haskell-like, to seek the Catholic vote.

With His Wife Indicted for Corruption, Spanish Socialist PM Sánchez Is Considering Resigning

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez writes a ‘Letter to the citizenry’, and announces that he is ‘suspending all his public duties to stop and reflect on the future and decide whether he wants to continue to be at the forefront of politics’.

Sánchez ‘won’ the last election in an illegitimate way, after breaking a solemn campaign promise and establishing an artificial majority by enacting an amnesty to the Catalan Separatists.

Now, as his wife is under investigation for influence peddling and corruption, Sánchez is indignant, threatening to resign his premiership because of what he calls political persecution.

Sanchez wrote on X:

“It is not usual for me to address you through a letter. However, the severity of the attacks that my wife and I are receiving, and the need to give a calm response, make me think that this is the best way to express my opinion. I thank you, therefore, for taking a little of your time to read these lines.

As you may already know, and if I do not inform you, a court in Madrid has opened preliminary proceedings against my wife, Begoña Gómez, at the request of a far-right organization called Clean Hands, to investigate alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business.”

The judge in the case will call journalists that that have been covering the case to testify.

Sánchez said that his wife ‘will defend her honorability and will collaborate with Justice in everything required to clarify facts’ that he says ‘are as scandalous in appearance as they are non-existent’.

The case was initiated by Sánchez’ political rival Alberto Núñez Feijóo, Spanish People’s Party President, conservative member of the Congress of Deputies.

Feijóo reported the case to the Conflict of Interest Office, asking for the Prime Minister to be disqualified from holding public office.

Sánchez continues: “Next, they exploited their conservative majority in the Senate, promoting an investigative commission to, as they say, clarify the facts related to this matter. Logically, the case was missing. It is the step they have just taken.

In short, it is an operation of harassment and demolition by land, sea and air, to try to make me weaken politically and personally by attacking my wife.”

The ‘attacks’ are against what he represents: ‘a progressive political option, supported election after election by millions of Spaniards, based on economic progress, social justice and democratic regeneration.’

“Democracy spoke, but the right and the extreme right, again, did not accept the electoral result. They were aware that the political attack would not be enough and now they have crossed the line of respect for the family life of a President of the Government and the attack on his personal life.”

After a lot of complaining and painting his opponents in the worst colors, Sánchez gets to the point:

“At this point, the question I legitimately ask myself is, is all this worth it? Sincerely I dont know. This attack is unprecedented, it is so serious and so gross that I need to stop and reflect with my wife.

[…] I need to stop and reflect. I urgently need to answer the question of whether it is worth it. […] Whether I should continue at the head of the Government or resign from this high honor.”

Russia-ChinaGate: The EU Left’s Strategy to Discredit the Right

Petr Bystron, one of AfD’s candidates for the European Parliament
Metropolico.org, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons

The recent revelations linking one of Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) MEP Maximilian Krah’s  assistants to Chinese intelligence provided a perfect opportunity for the left wing in Brussels to amplify their ongoing smear campaign against all conservative lawmakers in the European Parliament—despite the embarrassing lack of credible evidence against anybody else.

“The AfD is once again showing its true, unpatriotic face. Anyone who votes AfD in the European elections is voting for more influence from Russia and China,” German MEP Daniel Caspary of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) said on Monday. Politico—“the always faithful servant of the Brussels bureaucracy,” as our senior columnist Mick Hume put it while talking at NatCon—smugly described Germany’s second most popular party as the “Alternative for Dictators.”

It’s easy to get caught up in the web of intentionally vague accusations, half-truths, and irrelevant details, so if we want to understand how we ended up here, we first need to understand there’s not one, but two stories here, related to each other—but not necessarily in the way that the political and media mainstream would have you believe.

Two stories, one narrative

In late March, Czech authorities shut down the news site Voice of Europe (VoE) after an investigation conducted by the country’s national security services claimed that the publication was at the the center of a Russian interference network that allegedly paid European lawmakers from several countries for interviews in which they promoted Kremlin talking points.

According to the Czech daily Denik N, the authorities identified politicians from six EU member states (Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Poland) who have allegedly accepted cash from VoE. Curiously, only one name became public—AfD’s Petr Bystron’s.

The report claimed that the authorities are in possession of a voice recording implicating Bystron, but the tape has still not been released despite the entire AfD demanding the Czechs make it public. No prosecution has been launched against anyone to date.

In a statement on their Telegram channel on April 1st, Voice of Europe struck back at the accusations, saying:

The fact that the architects of this hoax have not provided any concrete evidence to support their claims leads us to believe that they simply wanted to silence a news platform that is critical of their viewpoints and their globalist agenda, and which is furthermore open to alternative opinions and perspectives.

Through its authoritarian actions, the Fiala administration has stripped us of the right to a fair trial and set a dangerous precedent in government and media relations within the European Union.

The news outlet also reminded readers of “the 2016 Russiagate hoax perpetrated against U.S. President Trump by globalist politicians in cahoots with America’s politicized intelligence agencies, the latter of which are increasingly being weaponized against Christians, conservatives, and other dissident Americans.”

Weeks have passed, but neither Prague nor Brussels has produced any evidence against Bystron—or anybody else. Nonetheless, a relentless smear campaign began in and outside of the halls of the European institutions against everyone associated with national conservative parties, and the Parliament began drafting a resolution to condemn the alleged Russian interference, set to be approved on Thursday, April 25th.

To be clear, we do not yet know the truth behind the vague allegations against Voice of Europe,  because whatever evidence the Czech authorities have is still classified. But lack of evidence has not prevented the left using the alleged scandal as a stick to beat the right across Europe. Conservative MEPs are being collectively demonized in Brussels with the sole purpose of undermining their credibility close to the EU elections.

Enter Maximilian Krah, a German MEP from AfD, and incidentally number one on the party’s European Parliament electoral list. On Monday, a Chinese-born assistant of Krah’s, one Jian Guo, was arrested on espionage charges. According to German federal authorities, Guo was a Chinese intelligence asset reporting to Beijing about the Parliament’s most anti-CCP members.

Krah denies having any involvement in, or knowledge of, Guo’s CCP connections. But in any case, the AfD should have seen this coming months ago. The European Conservative was the first to break the story about Guo possibly being on the CCP payroll back in April 2023, so the party had ample time to prepare.

Predictably, the Left is now conflating the two AfD-related cases: the vague ‘RussiaGate’ scandal allegedly involving the Voice of Europe and Petr Bystron, and the police investigation into a CCP spy network involving Krah’s aide Guo. Lacking evidence to support the former, Brussels relies on the latter to retroactively connect the two and somehow ‘prove’ that all European conservatives are Chinese and Russian assets.

The reason is simple: right-wing populist and national conservative parties, among them the AfD, are predicted to significantly increase their presence in the European Parliament after the June EU elections, which is reportedly the biggest concern of the current left-wing majority in Brussels. The Guo arrest is the perfect opportunity to try to discredit not only the AfD but the entire populist Right, amplified by Voice of Europe’s alleged Russia scandal, regardless of whether it is true or not.

The current focus on this Russia-Chinagate double scandal also provides the left with a timely answer to the Qatar- and Pfizergate scandals. The biggest conflict of interest, interference, and corruption scandals of the past five years are all linked to the leftist and mainstream political forces in the parliament and the European Commission. Yet these scandals, many of which have not been sufficiently addressed, are left to linger in the Brussels air until after the elections, while the latest scandals, real or imagined, involving the right are blown up into big campaign issues.

Of course, there is Russian and Chinese interference in Europe (as well as American for that matter) because that’s how great powers operate. Any elected members of the European Parliament who are found guilty will deserve every condemnation. But the point is that there are facts and there are political narratives—and the relationship between the two is seldom as direct as we are led to believe.
