A man described as an “African type” by a 20-year-old rape victim has been arrested, with the brutal attack against the young student taking place just days after the assailant was released from prison.

The 25-year-old suspect may have migrated from Africa, but he is already a naturalized French citizen, which means deportation is nearly impossible. He is accused of raping the woman last Thursday evening in Villejuif, according to the Créteil public prosecutor’s office.

According to a judicial source speaking with French publication Actu17, the man was released from prison in January 2024, just days before he targeted the woman. The same source noted that the man was already known to the police for acts of rape.

The man, who lives in Yvelines, is accused of following the victim into her building on the Avenue de Paris, in the district of the Paul-Brousse Hospital. When she opened the door at approximately 9:00 p.m., he slid in behind her and followed her into the elevator. A few minutes after she entered her apartment, she heard a knock. When she opened the door, the man rushed at her with a knife, tied her up, and raped her.

A police source said it was “a particularly violent scene.”

He then stole the woman’s handbag and phone. The woman, who was in a state of shock, broke free from her binding and ran to her friend on another floor. Police responded to the crime scene and conducted a full sweep of the building and surrounding neighborhood. She told the police the male was an “African type” who was 1.85 meters (6’0″) tall.

The suspect was quickly arrested by police the next day, Friday.

As the world becomes more unstable, Britain’s ability to defend itself is falling to new depths. The situation has become so bad that senior officials say the public will need to be called up to fight if Britain goes to war.

Signs of this decline have been present for some time. An online war simulation held just two years before Russia invaded Ukraine saw the British Army run out of ammunition after a measly eight days. At the beginning of 2023, then-Defence Secretary Ben Wallace warned that the force had been “hollowed out” to such an extent over the past two to three decades that it had “fallen behind its peer group” and should stop “reaching beyond” itself.

Now, General Sir Patrick Sanders, who is head of the Army, warns that the government must “mobilise the nation” in the event of war with another nation. (The papers are all pointing at Russia.) The chief, who is standing down from his position in six months, does not support conscription. Instead, he stresses that there must be a “shift” in the mindset of civilian men and women so that, as The Daily Telegraph put it, they “think more like troops” and are “mentally prepared that war with Russia could happen.”

Figures released this month show that the Army will have fewer than 70,000 soldiers within two years, a drop of 40% since when the Conservatives took office in 2010. Projections in The Times also suggest that the whole Army could fit inside Manchester City’s 53,400-capacity Etihad Stadium in a decade’s time, with more than 1,000 seats left empty.

It is amid this backdrop that military recruiters are considering lowering standards to allow those with hay fever, asthma, and visible tattoos to join the ranks. The Armed Forces could also raise its retirement age to boost numbers, with Tory ministers insisting there is “no philosophical barrier” to stop this.

Some Army officials appear to have attempted to save face by claiming that “the numbers aren’t quite as totemic and as golden as people say.” But this does nothing to address what Wallace this month described as a “real challenge” for the forces; that “Generation Z is not joining the Armed Forces in the way my generation did.” He said that “post-Covid skill shortages in engineering and all sorts of things” have had a particular, more recent impact. Reports have also pointed to changing trends among the nation’s young, such as the fact that Gen Z is too hooked to the smartphone to be interested in working on submarines.

While these failures go unattended, enemy forces are bound to take in British threats with a sense of amusement.

A French rural party, set up with the support of President Emmanuel Macron to target the right-wing National Rally party (RN), is facing trouble after a top figure left amid farmers’ fury against Paris.

The Rural Alliance, formed late in 2023, has seen Thierry Coste, a prominent lobbyist, turn his back on the group, just months before the European elections. Coste is angry about “the silence” on the agricultural crisis and the strategy of the party.

“I noticed that I was having trouble being heard and understood,” Coste told Agence France-Presse on January 23.

Talking about the Rural Alliance’s launch in November, he agreed the event was “successful” although “everything was very amateurish”. Coste lamented the departure of prospective celebrity members such as chef Pierre Gagnaire and cycling champion Bernard Hinault, whom he claimed were “not properly briefed” beforehand.

After remaining “discreet” for several weeks, Coste said he had decided to speak up over the country-wide French farmers’ protests.

He said agricultural workers’ outrage “ticks all the boxes” for the Rural Alliance, adding that he “cannot understand” the party’s lack of response on the issue.

On January 23, a press release from the Rural Alliance broke its silence, stating it “supports the movement” of farmers and criticises “grotesque French and European policies influenced by radical ecology”.

Regarding Coste, Rural Alliance downplayed the situation, saying he “has never been on the list, nor campaign director,” and was only present at the party launch “as a political advisor to the hunters’ federation”.

Coste is a veteran pro-hunting lobbyist and has claimed a close allegiance with Macron, stating: “The President knows everything, he trusts me.”

Macron’s support could lie in the fact that any seats the Rural Alliance picked up would then not go to Rassemblement National, which poised to be the biggest French party in the European Parliament, though this is contested.

Coste claims to have advised Macron informally on rural matters and was involved in the Government’s 2019 pro-hunting reforms.

In November last year, Willy Schraen, the president of the National Federation of Hunters, flanked by Coste, announced they were working to form a list for the European elections 2024, with the “discreet” support of the Elysée Palace. Schraen has previously said he voted for Macron.

Still, the Rural Alliance’s impact is set to be minor – current polls indicate it would only collect 1 per cent of the European Parliament vote.

Support in rural France is shifting further to the Right. Jean-Baptiste Moreau, a former La République en Marche MP, recently wrote to Macron saying the agriculture sector “feels like it is no longer being listened to and that its way of life is no longer suitable”.

“With the multiplication of measures or proposals systematically in confrontation with his way of life, a kind of cleavage, of bitterness has set in.”

The former MP said he did think RN would be much affected by the rural party because RN is well established in rural areas.

He does believe, though, it could hurt the centre-right Les Républicains.

Schraen declared during an interview in Le Monde in November that he intended to “defend the values of the rural world, of rurality, not only of hunting and traditions”.

He said he wanted to compose a list, with “real people” from “fishing, horseback riding, agriculture, breeding, or even catering”.

“People who today are practically pariahs vis-à-vis Europe.”

The stated main goal is to “protect rurality” from European policies which, according to Rural Alliance, lead to decisions that are “disconnected” from the realities on the ground.

A Christmas Carol is set to be the latest example of a classic piece of art being rewritten for the “woke era” with Scrooge regenerated as an “Indian Tory who hates refugees”.

Film-maker Gurinder Chadha is reimagining one of Charles Dickens’s best-known characters in the festive tale, which will be “very diverse”.

Chadha, who is best known for Bend It Like Beckham, said the overall story would be “very close to Dickens’s original themes” given the “cost-of-living crisis in Britain”.

Appearing at a hearing of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, the director spoke about British film and “high-end TV”.

She told the committee members: “I’m making A Christmas Carol, but my Scrooge is an Indian Tory who hates refugees. But then we go on that journey with them, and hopefully they have reclamation.

“I did tell the Prime Minister about it and he said ‘Oh, don’t make me look bad’.

“And I said: ‘I don’t have to do that for you, Rishi’. The film is fun and it’s British, it’s Dickens, it’s very close to Dickens’ original themes, given our cost-of-living crisis in Britain.”

Chadha added that she had “struggled to get it off the ground” which she claimed was partly because the lead is Indian.

She said: “By making it an Indian Scrooge it changes everything in terms of how I get it financed. Suddenly people go ‘It’s not commercial, it’s small, it’s an Indian film’.”

The 64-year-old also said the first person she sent the script to was Stephen Fry.

She added that Fry had responded “super favourably” and said he had “cried buckets” when he read it because he was so moved.

She described the remake as Dickens “done in a totally different cultural way”.

The woke adaption follows in the footsteps of a West End production of The Wizard Of Oz which was condemned for turning modern capitalism into the villain of the piece.

Mail on Sunday’s theatre critic Robert Gore-Langton wrote at the time: “The look is evil American capitalism. The agenda is woke.”

Frank Furedi, emeritus professor of sociology at Kent University, added: “This is another example of the disturbing trend of politicising children’s entertainment.”

A Turkish military expert has proposed flooding Greece will illegal immigrants because of the Mediterranean country’s armament program

A former ambassador on Turkish television channel SZC provided context as to why Greece has much more secured borders – Turkey’s previous attempts to flood Greece will illegal immigrants resulted in European Union funding to construct fences and install CCTV cameras.

This comment prompted Retired Brigadier General Özgür Tör to suggest whether illegal immigrants could instead be taken to the Greek islands in an effort to stop Greece from upgrading its F16 fighter jet fleet to Viper class.

“If we send thousands of people (immigrants) in boats to the [Greek] islands, they cannot hold them. Instead of purchasing the F-16 Vipers, let them deal with the immigrants,” questioned the Turkish military expert.

It is recalled that Turkey purged their own air force (and temporarily replaced pilots with Pakistanis) in 2016, has been booted from the F-35 program, and US Congress is not allowing Turkey to upgrade its F-16 fleet.

She claimed that several ladies in captivity had been raped more than once. In fact, she claimed that a lot of ladies had not had a monthly cycle in a long time, which could indicate that they were pregnant.

“There are women in captivity who haven’t had their menstrual cycle for a long time, and maybe that’s what we should pray for – that their bodies will protect them, and they won’t be subjected to pregnancy. We need to do everything to bring them back. There are difficult physical conditions of food and hygiene, and also harsh conditions of danger that we don’t know if their captors will receive orders to harm them. I am very worried about them,” Almog was quoted as saying.

“The terrorists bring inappropriate clothes for the girls, doll-like clothes. They turned the girls into their dolls, that they can do whatever they want with. And it’s unbelievable that they’re still there. I can’t breathe; I can’t cope with this, and it’s too difficult. We are closing in on four months, and they are still there,” she added. 

Another woman, Aviva Siegel, 62, said, “I was there 51 days and there wasn’t a moment that we didn’t go through abuse of any kind. They had turned both women and men hostages into dolls on a string that they can do with them what they please, whenever they please. I saw it with my own eyes. I didn’t just see, I felt the women as if they were my daughters.”
