Germany’s anti-immigration AfD hits new polling high of 20%

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is more popular with voters than ever before, soaring to 20 percent of the vote in the latest Sunday poll, released every week by INSA on behalf of Bild newspaper. It has never reached this level in an INSA poll before, with the AfD’s steady weekly ascent in popularity shaking the German political establishment.
The poll shows that the AfD improved by half a percentage point compared to last week’s poll, leaving it tied with the Social Democrats (SPD) and only 6.5 points behind the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU).
In the poll, the CDU and FDP each lost half a percentage point, bringing both parties to 26.5 and 7.5 percent, respectively.
AfD politicians celebrated the polling results, with Martin Hess posting on Twitter: “Record! In the ‘Sunday Question’ survey by the Insa Institute, our AfD comes to 20 percent nationwide. That puts us on par with the ruling SPD and only 6.5 percentage points behind the Union.”
Perhaps just as important for the AfD as its recent polling high is the increase in voter potential, or in other words, the number of voters willing to vote for the party. This figure has increased substantially year-over-year, with 30 percent of Germans now saying they could imagine voting for the AfD.
The AfD is also enjoying a huge increase in voters who will “definitely” vote for the party, with 15 percent of voters now falling into this category. This represents a doubling of this figure year-over-year and shows the party has grown its base of support.
This growth has all occurred despite constant threats of the part being banned, a virtual blackout of AfD politicians on the country’s powerful state-funded political talk shows, police raids, and mass surveillance of members.
The rise of the AfD has led to sharp debates within the country’s political and journalist class. As Remix News reported last month, AfD’s surge has likely been driven by a broad range of factors. Germany is facing a significant inflation and economic crisis, as well as a migration crisis. The INSA poll shows that 34 percent of voters describe themselves as “angry citizens” and among AfD supporters, 70 percent describe themselves that way.
“The AfD is currently catching those sections of society for whom the Union does not distinguish itself clearly enough from the traffic light coalition,” said INSA’s chief, Hermann Binkert.

Iraqi migrant arrested for knife attack on woman at bus stop in quaint German village
A 28-year-old Iraqi national was arrested in Germany on Saturday on suspicion of a knife attack on a woman at a bus stop in broad daylight.
According to a joint statement by the public prosecutor’s office and local police, the incident occurred shortly before noon in Lienzingen, a village with a population of just 2,000 around 40 kilometers northwest of Stuttgart.
A 27-year-old woman, who is understood to have known the victim, was left lying in a pool of blood following the attack. Some bystanders stayed to tend to her injuries and alert the authorities, while others attempted to chase the attacker who fled the scene.
A manhunt involving tracking dogs and a helicopter was authorized by local police, who located and arrested the suspect approximately three hours after the attack.
The victim was taken to the hospital after sustaining knife wounds and is understood to be in a serious but not life-threatening condition, according to investigators.
“There is a suspicion that the 28-year-old tried to kill the woman in the act,” a police statement read.
The suspect remains in custody and appeared before magistrates at the Karlsruhe District Court on Sunday for a bail application.
Prosecutors insisted the Iraqi migrant poses a considerable risk of absconding, a submission acknowledged by the judge who ordered the suspect to remain in custody pending the police investigation.
No further information has been revealed regarding the nature of the offense or the relationship between the attacker and his victim.
The investigation is ongoing.

Senior Samajwadi Party leader, ST Hasan who is known for his inflammatory utterances has asked, “Why does anyone have a problem if we apply Sharia law to ourselves”? He was speaking against the under-consideration Uniform Civil Code in the country.
“India is a land of unity is diversity. Our country is a bouquet of colorful flowers. When our country got independence, Dr Ambedkar wrote that every person is free to practice and preach their religion. This is written in our constitution. Why is anyone bothered if we want to live our life as per Sharia,” he asked.
According to him, Islam was the first faith to grant women rights over their paternal property. “How it is divided amongst boys and girls is a separate matter. The Quran has commanded it. If a Muslim is a sincere believer, he cannot reject the Quran. Even I can’t do it. Only the instructions provided to us by the Quran will be followed.”
He challenged, “They can enact countless laws. We won’t be impacted. Muslims solely adhere to Quran, and they will divide their assets among their offspring in accordance with Sharia. Why is it a problem for anyone,” he questioned and added, “Regarding the issue of the second marriage, I would like to know what your issue is if a man took a second wife with the consent of his first one if she is found to have a serious illness or couldn’t conceive.”
He charged that the government had institutionalized immorality and indecency in the nation. “You granted homosexuality and live-in relationships constitutional legitimacy. How is it possible for you to state that don’t marry twice? How can you prevent someone from getting married to multiple women if you can cohabitate with multiple partners in live-in relationships,” he questioned.
“Muslims observe the rules that Allah provided us in the Quran. My point of contention is that no one is troubled by them in any way. These are our personal laws. We will push back strongly against your plans to obliterate them,” the member of Lok Sabha from Moradabad warned. “We have been abiding by the same laws for 75 years. What problems have they caused since then? Has anyone complained if a female’s share of the paternal property is lower than that of a male?”
“What is your problem,” he reiterated. He alleged that it is not about UCC but preparation for 2024 when the next general elections are scheduled to be held. “They want to cultivate the seeds of animosity between the Hindus and Muslims who live in this country. BJP leaders are competing to torture Muslims. They rise to prominence in the party in direct proportion to how severely they torment Muslims. This is well understood by the Muslims.”
He further proclaimed, “I informed you that Sharia law does not bother anyone and that the instructions are already there in the Quran. Every Muslim conforms to the Quran, and anyone who refuses is not a good Muslim. Who could reject the Quran? Any Muslim can be queried about whether or not they comply with the Quran’s teachings. If you don’t want to, switch your religion. How are we to commit to anything else?”
Notably, Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender, and sexual orientation. It has been in the election manifesto of the BJP for the past several years and recently 22nd Law Commission sought fresh suggestions from various stakeholders, including public and religious organisations, on the same.
ST Hasan is infamous for making outrageous assertions and provocative statements in an effort to attack the BJP. He recently blamed the government for spying on opposition leaders after an objectionable film started playing on a CCTV monitor installed at his Moradabad residence. He alleged that the government is using Pegasus to spy on them.
In 2021, he argued that the central BJP government’s interference with Islamic Sharia law during its seven years in power is to blame for the deaths brought on by the coronavirus outbreak. He expressed that the occurrence of two cyclonic storms in the space of ten days and the death toll from the coronavirus epidemic are the repercussions of the injustices committed by the administration.
In opposition to the Triple Talaq law in 2019, he voiced that an individual would become furious if he returned home to find his wife with another man. India: ‘Hit the police, burn everything’ – How an Islamist mob launched attack in Junagadh, Gujarat, amid chants of Allahu Akbar
On Friday, June 16, an Islamist mob attacked the police in the Junagadh district of Gujarat after they saw a notice regarding illegal encroachment on the walls of a dargah in the city. The Muslims attacked with stones and created massive violence injuring four policemen and a Hindu civilian. The stones were reportedly pelted at the police vehicles and an ST bus after which an FIR was filed against 31 persons in this case.
According to a report by Divya Bhaskar, the police filed an FIR based on the complaint filed by a woman police officer at the Junagadh police station. As per the complaint, the Muslim mob launched a protest after they saw a notice regarding illegal encroachment on the wall of a dargah. The Muslim protestors raised slogans of ‘Allahu Akbar’ and damaged government and private vehicles parked on the road.
The female police officer in the complaint said that around 8:30 pm on the night of June 16, there was a message in the social media group of the division police station, and the officers and employees were asked to immediately report to the PI at Majewadi Dargah. The police reached the spot to see that a crowd of 500 to 600 men and women had gathered against the notice about illegal encroachment pasted on the wall of the Dargah in the region.
According to the FIR, the police officers who reached the spot asked the mob to adopt a legal way of putting up their point instead of gathering illegally. The crowd then got agitated and the men and women shouted slogans and attacked the police.
Slogans of ‘Allahu Akbar’ were raised
As per the FIR copy registered in the case, the agitated Muslim mob raised slogans of ‘Nara-e-Takbir, Allahu Akbar’ and also said ‘burn everything’, ‘police ko maro (hit the police)’, ‘Koi Jinda Nahi Bachna Chahiye (no one shall be spared alive)’. Some of the Muslims could also be heard saying, “If we kill the police, no one will come our way.” The mob then began pelting stones at the police vans and also attacked some of the private vehicles.
Some torched motorcycles parked near the dargah and also pelted stones at vehicles and pedestrians passing by. Besides, the mob also pelted stones at an ST bus and broke the glass of the bus with sticks. Four policemen and a Hindu civilian have been reported as injured. The injured were immediately shifted to the hospital where the Hindu individual is said to have died during the treatment.

The notice regarding illegal encroachment was issued by the Municipal Corporation to the Dargah on the road outside the Majewadi Gate of Junagadh. The members of the Dargah were asked to submit evidence of ownership of the land within 5 days. But instead of adopting the legal method, the Muslim community members started gathering near the Dargah on June 16 evening and attacked the police around 10 pm.
Reportedly, the ST bus which was targeted during violence was being driven by a driver named Asif. The mob initially targeted the bus and closed its door from outside to set it on fire. The driver told the media that despite repeated requests, the mob did not listen to him. But the bus was allowed to disembark after the driver told the mob that his name was Asif.
Commissioner Rajesh U. Tanna commented on the matter and said that the Dargah authorities have provided no documents claiming ownership. “It will be decided whether the land possession is correct or not only after the documents are obtained,” he added.
