Swedish Churches forced to close due to heating costs

For the first time, looming power cuts, energy rationing and skyrocketing gas prices in the coming winter in Sweden will affect worship.

The Church of Sweden is closing down its houses of worship this winter because they are unable to pay heating bills. It is not certain how many churches will be closed and there have been no orders from the dioceses. However, it is certain that many will resort to closure to save on energy.

Skara Pastorate has decided to completely close 11 of its 16 churches over the winter due to unaffordable electricity.

“Now we are closing completely and we have never done that before. We will close from All Saints until April completely, and not open them until the spring heat comes, hopefully in early April,” Robert Lorentzon, the provost, told national broadcaster SVT.

In the five churches in Skara that will stay open, the heat will be lowered by two degrees. No baptisms or funerals will be held in the other churches this winter.

The Diocese of Gothenburg estimated that at least 40 churches will be closed this winter and in Skåne and Blekinge counties in southern Sweden, up to half of a total of 540 churches belonging to Lund diocese may close. If electricity bills rise to over SEK 200 000 ($18,000) per “medium-sized church”, diocese engineer Andreas Månsson said they had no choice.

In Västra Götaland, the Mellerud pastorate will close four of its eleven churches to conserve energy.

According to the Swedish Civil Contingencies agency (MSB), power rationing could affect traffic lights, trams, heating and communications as well as electronic locks to properties, among other things.

The temperature in swimming pools and gyms, saunas, ice rinks, and other “energy-intensive leisure centers” is going to be lowered.

The decision by Brussels to ban Russian energy has resulted in a wave of inflation, with record-high prices and exorbitant electricity bills contributing to a cost-of-living crisis. Food prices have risen for nine consecutive months in Sweden alone.

Bangladesh: Yet another Hindu temple attacked by Muslims

Broken Kali idol (Image Source: Bhaskar)

In yet another attack on Hindus in Bangladesh, a Kali temple in Dautiya village in Bangladesh’s Jhenaidah district was attacked on Friday, October 7. The Kali idol was found smashed into pieces, with the head of the idol discovered around half a kilometer away from the temple premises. The incident came to the fore just a day after the conclusion of the 10-day-long Durga Puja festival, the biggest celebration for Hindus in Bengal.

The perpetrators behind the attack have not been identified yet, and authorities have launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the suspects. The temple, which has been frequented by Maa Kali devotees since British times, is located in the western part of Bangladesh. General Secretary of Bangladesh Puja Celebration Council, Chandanath Poddar said that the attack took place at the temple during the night, and authorities discovered the shattered idol on Friday morning.

Amit Kumar Burman, assistant superintendent of Jhenaidah police said, “A case has been registered and the suspects are being traced. Barring this incident, this year Durga Puja festival was celebrated peacefully across Bangladesh.”

It is notable that last year, in 2021, Durga Puja celebrations faced a wave of attacksby Islamists. Temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj, Chattogram’s Banshkhali, Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj, and Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua were brutally attacked with the Hindu devotees being thrashed. At least six people were killed and hundreds were injured as Islamists openly targeted Hindus in the country.

Not the first attack on a Hindu temple in Bangladesh in recent months

This is not the first case of a Hindu temple coming under attack in Bangladesh in recent months. Ahead of Durga Puja in September, unknown vandals smashed the idols at the Kashipur Sarbajanin Durga Temple in Mehendiganj Upazila in Barisal.

Earlier in August, three madrasa students were detained by authorities on August 6 for allegedly damaging Hindu deity statues at the Kainmari temple in Mongla Upazila in Bangladesh. The incident happened after several Muslim youngsters from the madrasa were requested by the temple management to stop playing football on the field next to the temple.

On July 16, it was reported that a Muslim mob vandalized a temple, a grocery shop, and many Hindu homes in the Sahapara region of Lohagara, Narail, merely over a Facebook post.

Brussels Terror Attack Victim Euthanised at 23 After Unbearable Psychological Suffering

A Flemish woman (photo above) who was present at the Brussels National Airport in 2016 during a radical Islamic terror attack has been euthanised at the age of 23 due to psychological trauma and suffering.

Shanti De Corte was just 23 when she died earlier this year on May 7th after requesting to be euthanised following years of psychological trauma and suffering resulting from her experiences on March 22nd 2016, when Islamist terrorists detonated explosives at the Brussels National Airport.

The young Flemish woman, who was with 90 other classmates in the airport departures area that day heading for a graduation trip to Rome, was not physically injured by the explosion, despite being just several metres away, broadcaster RTBF reports.

A few weeks after the attacks, De Corte was hospitalised in a psychiatric facility in Antwerp and was treated with antidepressants. On Facebook, she claimed to have taken as many as 11 antidepressant pills per day and wrote: “With all the medication I take, I feel like a ghost who no longer feels anything. Maybe there were other solutions than drugs.”

“There are some students who react worse than others to traumatic events. And having had her twice in an interview, I can tell you that Shanti De Corte was one of those fragile students. For me it is clear, she already had serious psychological disorders before the attack. So I referred her to psychiatry,” a psychologist who worked at De Corte’s school told RTBF.

In the years that followed the terror attack, De Corta was again hospitalised in 2018, and in 2020 made an attempt to end her own life.

She had also made several requests for euthanasia but was denied until she approached an association that advocates for those wishing to end their own lives with the assistance of physicians.

In April of this year, De Corte again made a request for euthanasia, which was granted by two psychiatrists. She was killed the following month surrounded by her family.

De Corte is not the only terror attack survivor in recent years to be greatly psychologically affected by their experience. In 2019, Guillaume Valette, a survivor of the 2015 Bataclan attack in Paris was recognised as the 131st victim of the attack after he ended his own life in 2017.

Valette, like De Corte, suffered from psychological trauma in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which deteriorated to the point that he hanged himself.

Chaos in France as strikes leave gas stations running low on fuel

Walkouts at four of TotalEnergies’ refineries have left most of the company’s network of 3,500 gas stations without gas as motorists across France scramble to fill up their cars.

The French government on Friday revealed that 15 percent of the country’s petrol stations were affected by a lack of either one or all fuels. It was keen to stress that the issue did not stem from an actual shortage but rather the strong demand at TotalEnergies’ stations due to a discount per liter of 20 cents; in addition, it mentioned that an ongoing strike had affected supply chains.

Strategic oil reserves will likely be used over the weekend, France’s Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher confirmed, as reported by Reuters.

She called on French citizens “to be confident,” insisting that “over 80 percent of petrol stations are functioning as normal.” However, she admitted there were “significant supply tensions” in some regions.

The government has responded by giving exclusive access to some stations to key workers like healthcare professionals, according to the France24 news outlet.

Various reports have suggested that motorists residing near Belgium have been crossing the border to fill up their tanks.

Reuters reported on Friday that most of the urban petrol stations around Paris “appeared to be affected by shortages of at least one type of fuel, with most diesel pumps running dry,” and long queues at pumps had been forming as early as Wednesday.

Industrial action over pay is expected to continue for some time, with TotalEnergies announcing recently that wage negotiations will begin in November. The CGT trade union called on its members to strike at two refineries and two storage facilities owned by the energy company.

US blames Ukraine for assassination of Daria Dugin

The US blames people in the Ukrainian government for the murder of Daria Dugin. Russian secret services had also blamed Ukraine for the crime. They furthermore suspect that the attack had actually been aimed at her father, who had repeatedly defended the Russian operation in Ukraine in the past.

According to the US news channel CNN and the New York Times, which cite unnamed sources in the Biden administration, the United States “admonished” the government in Kiev about this.

However, it is not known who exactly ordered the attack. The US was not informed in advance, reported CNN. The daughter of the philosopher Alexander Dugin was killed in a bomb attack near the Russian capital on August 20. She was previously at a pro-government event with her father. Contrary to plan, however, she left the venue a little earlier and alone.

The US was allegedly not involved in the attack, and never provided intelligence nor other assistance, officials said.

Ukraine immediately after the attack denied involvement in the assassination, and senior US officials reiterated this denial when asked about US intelligence assessments. According to the current state of knowledge of the Russian investigators, Daria Dugin was followed by a Ukrainian agent before the attack. The alleged perpetrator is said to have left for Estonia by car on the evening of the crime. Nothing is officially known about her further whereabouts since then.

The European Union nevertheless placed her father the Russian philosopher and political scientist Alexander Dugin, on its sanctions list despite the fact that his daughter was murdered in the terrorist attack organized by the Ukrainian intelligence service.

The EU has also extended its anti-Russian sanctions to the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, according to the EU Council even though they do not recognize Russian sovereignty over these territories.

Munich 1972: Olympic terrorist cashed in 2000 dollars for interview with German public broadcaster

“I am proud. Proud of what I have done. Should it come up again – I am ready.”

With this inhuman statement, the Palestinian terrorist Mohammed Safady (69) boasted in the German broadcaster ARD’s documentary “Death and Games”, which was broadcast in September.

It does not describe a heroic deed, but the brutal attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the 1972 Games in Munich. Back then, the terrorists killed eleven Israelis and a Bavarian policeman.

Now it has come out: For his interview, the Palestinian received 2000 US dollars from a production company that filmed on behalf of ARD. This was first reported by the news magazine “Focus”. The fee paid to Safady caused horror among the relatives of the victims!

Ilana Romano lost her husband, the weightlifter Yossef Romano († 32), 50 years ago. The horrified widow told the newspaper BILD: “I think that anyone who gives money to terrorists is complicit in a crime.” Romano was the first of the hostages to die; he had bravely stood in the way of the attackers and was riddled with bullets from a Kalashnikov – presumably Safady pulled the trigger.

In the run-up to the filming, the participating broadcasters SWR, rbb and BR had agreed not to pay any fee to Palestinian terrorists. But: The executive producer has meanwhile admitted to having paid 2000 dollars as an exclusive fee to the terrorist. An ARD spokeswoman told BILD yesterday: “Our editorial offices were not informed about this by the producer”. It was known that “expenses customary in the media business, especially for security precautions in the context of the interview with one of the assassins” had been paid by the producers, according to the ARD spokeswoman.

Dieter Graumann (72), former president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, told BILD: “It is immoral, undignified and distasteful when a terrorist murderer is financed with money, from public funds to boot.” Ilana Romano said: “The terrorists who murdered our husbands deserve prison. They don’t deserve money.”

Mohammed Safady was never punished for his crimes.
