Italian Elections: Right-Populist Leading Polls Promises Pro-Family Tax Cuts

Italian social conservative firebrand Giorgia Meloni, leader of the Brother of Italy (FdI), has promised to cut taxes as her party remains the most popular ahead of next month’s national elections.

Ms Meloni, who appeared at a campaign event alongside former European Parliament president Antonio Tajani, has promised radical tax reforms that would favour households with larger families, presumably to combat Italy’s demographic decline without resorting to mass immigration.

“FdI has always proposed a radical paradigm shift in the tax system, so that income taxation takes into account the composition and characteristics of families, with the introduction of the so-called family quotient,” Meloni said.

“In essence, the larger the family, the less taxes you pay,” she added, according to Il Giornale reporting.

“It is a legislative objective, but right from the start, we intend to make an immediate tangible contribution to all families. We will increase the single allowance by 50 per cent, which in this way will reach a maximum of 260 euros per month per child,” she explained.

Ms Meloni could likely be Italy’s next prime minister — and first female head of government — but some have questioned whether a Meloni government would act on social issues such as abortion.

Antonio Tajani, a member of Forza Italia which forms part of the centre-right coalition of parties that includes the Brothers of Italy and populist Matteo Salvini’s League, stated that they would not change Italy’s abortion laws, but would do more to help women who do not want to have an abortion but feel pressured to.

Meloni’s political opponents have tried to raise alarm bells about a possible right-wing coalition government, including current Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio of the left-populist Five Star Movement (M5S) — once the largest political force in Italy, but now polling in a distant fourth place.

“The League has a pact with United Russia and, if the right were to go to the government, it will take us into Putin’s arms,” Di Maio alleged, noting Salvini’s prior friendly relations with the party of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

“The risk for the country is the detachment from historical alliances, isolation and loss of freedom, not only at an economic level,” Di Maio added.

However, while Salvini has had friendly relations with Putin’s party in the past, Giorgia Meloni has been clear in her support of Ukraine during the ongoing conflict between Kyiv and Moscow several times.

“Ukraine … is the tip of the iceberg of a conflict whose objective is the revision of the world order. Russia is louder at present and China is quieter, but its penetration is reaching everywhere,” Meloni said in an interview with Reuters this week.

Salvini: ‘Hungarian family legislation is the best in Europe’

In the run-up to the early Italian parliamentary elections in September, the Italian right is setting the tone. Former Interior Minister Salvini, head of the right-wing Lega, has now suggested adopting Hungarian President Viktor Orbán’s family protection measures.

“There is no doubt,” Salvini said in an interview with Radio 24, “that the most progressive law for the family, which achieves the best results at European level, is the Hungarian one. But I’m not saying that because Orbán is there, if it were in France I would say: France”.

In Hungary there is “a lot of help, real economic incentives: after the third child, the woman is a greatly reduced taxpayer, from the fourth child she is no longer so, in short, the flat tax for families. And then there is parental leave, which is even extended to grandparents.”

Salvini’s competitor within the right-wing camp, Giorgia Meloni, chairwoman of the Fratelli d’Italia, also maintains good relations with the Hungarian head of government. According to the latest polls, the Italian right can count on many voters in the elections in September.

Switzerland: The trial against the Islamist knifewoman of Lugano has begun

The main hearing against the 29-year-old woman from Ticino who attacked two women with a knife, some of them causing serious injuries, at the Grandi Magazzini Manor Sud SA in Lugano on November 24, 2020 started in Bellinzona this morning. The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland assumes a terrorist motive.

The accused appeared at the start of the trial dressed entirely in black and initially refused to remove her head veil, as requested by the presiding federal criminal judge, Fiorenza Bergomi. She declared that she is a Muslim and that the court should respect this. Only after consulting with her defence lawyers did she remove her head veil.

The Ticino woman is charged with multiple attempted murders, violation of Article 2 of the Federal Law on the Prohibition of the Groups “Al-Qaida” and “Islamic State” and related organisations, and unlawful practice of prostitution, according to Article 199 SCC.

The interrogation of the accused revealed the profile of a young woman who had experienced one calamity after another in her life and suffered from serious psychological problems. Until the age of seven she was plagued by epileptic seizures, later she suffered from anorexia. She attended a special school.

At the age of 17, she became pregnant. She became a mother when she was almost of age, but the child was adopted by her parents. She married the father of the child, an Afghan national. At the beginning, the marriage was stable. Later, the husband allegedly beat and sexually abused his wife, as she explained in court. She then filed for divorce. Because of her psychological problems, she was often under treatment, received social assistance, and was later recognised 100 per cent by the social security system.

Late in the morning, she explained to the court how she had become close to Islam and had fallen in love with a Syrian fighter. The video calls with the man could last several hours, according to the accused.

The trial will continue this afternoon.

“80 fascists killed”: Islamo-Leftists mock the victims of the Islamist terrorist attack in Nice, France

The trial for the attack in Nice on July 14 will start on September 5. In the run-up to the first hearing, Christian Estrosi reported on “shameful postings referring to the attack in Nice” that were allegedly “spread on social networks”, as he denounced on Twitter. The mayor of Nice posted one of these invectives against the fatalities. He posted: “Nissa merdaaaaa – 80 fachos disparus” (Nissa merdaaaaa – 80 fascists shot).

Christian Estrosi announced that he would ” bring in the public prosecutor” after these kind of statements. “I appeal to the responsibility of the social networks. I consider the victims and their relatives,” said the mayor of Côte d’Azur. According to his first deputy, Anthony Borré, told BFM Côte d’Azur, Olympique Marseille fans were the perpetrators of such statements. He also denounced the act: “It’s disgusting. It is time to put an end to anonymity on social networks. Eternal respect for the victims and their families”.

Such statements come just a few days before the start of the trial for the July 14 attack. Eight defendants are due to appear before Paris’ special jury court in connection with the attack, which took place on the Promenade des Anglais in 2016 and killed 86 people and injured more than 400. The perpetrator, a 31-year-old Tunisian named Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlelqui, will not stand trial. On the evening of July 14, Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlelqui was shot dead by police after firing at the security forces himself. He had just driven a 19-tonne truck into the crowd that had gathered on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice to watch the fireworks.
