Italian police take down violent ‘Arab Zone 90133’ gang in Palermo

Italian police say they have dismantled a criminal gang called ‘Arab Zone 90133’ that committed a range of violent attacks between Jan. 7 and June 15 in the historic center of Palermo.

Police took a total of 11 people, six adults and five minors, under preventative custody. Five adults ended up in prison and one under house arrest. For the minors, precautionary measures were ordered against two of them, and three were placed in community juvenile centers.

The gang carried out violent attacks with broken glass bottles and sticks, mainly on weekends in Palermo’s historic center where young people usually gather. The charges against the members include aggravated injury, assault, threats, resisting an off-duty police officer, and aggravated robbery, according to news outlet QDS.it.

The gang was known for posting its deeds on social media, including on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, under a profile called “arabzone90133.” The members boasted that their gang was made up of Maghrebi North Africans, and made claims about what territory they controlled in the city. The Instagram profile has 1,385 followers, mostly minors.

The Arab Zone gang posted a number of videos to TIkTok showcasing the territory they claimed to control.

The city’s police commissioner also highlighted their North African origin, saying, “The group, or rather the herd, of very young people, along with some adults, was mainly of Maghreb origin and second-generation immigrants, some of whom were born in Palermo. They praised criminal actions such as robberies, thefts, and assaults for no reason, all perpetrated in the center around Via Maqueda, and all perpetrated in packs to the detriment of other young people, including disabled people, from the beginning of the year until a few weeks ago, when the circle of State Police investigators began to gather around them,” says Palermo police commissioner Leopoldo Laricchia.

“They violently claimed to ‘control the territory.’ Their social profile has more than 1,400 followers. Subculture probably fueled by films and series that exalt criminal deeds, social anger, marginalization, and drug use, most likely this is the mix that is making the youngest and most marginalized sections of our metropolis slide into crime,” he added.

Last month, over 2,000 migrants descended on lakeside towns in the Lake Garda region, where large-scale assaults and robberies occurred against residents and tourists alike. The mayor of one of the towns described the riots as a “day of war” after images of the incident went viral on social media. On the regional train in one of the towns, six young teen girls were sexually assaulted by a group of 30 migrants.

Planned Islamist terrorist attack in Germany: seven years’ imprisonment demanded

In the Hamburg trial of a planned Islamist terrorist attack on the 20th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11, the federal prosecutor has demanded seven years in prison for the defendant. The 21-year-old German-Moroccan was guilty of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state, senior public prosecutor Simon Henrichs told the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court on Tuesday. The defendant had also violated the War Weapons Control Act by purchasing a hand grenade and a firearm, he said. “The taking of evidence fully confirmed the indictment,” Henrichs said. The defendant’s arrest prevented an imminent attack with numerous deaths and injuries, he said.

According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the defendant intended to build an explosive device similar to the one used in the attack on the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. For this purpose, he had bought large quantities of chemicals as well as several hundred screws and nuts. While purchasing a Makarov pistol with 50 rounds of ammunition and a hand grenade, he had approached an undercover police officer. During the agreed handover of the weapons on August 26, 2021, in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant in Hamburg-Stellingen, the young man had been arrested by special forces.

Uruguay judge orders government, Pfizer to disclose jab ingredients forthwith

A senior judge in Uruguay has ordered the government and Pfizer to provide “extensive detail” on the biochemical composition and evidence of efficacy and safety of its COVID vaccine within 48 hours.

All parties are scheduled to appear next Wednesday to find out if the vaccines contain “nanotechnological elements” among other things.

The Administrative Litigation Judge Alejandro Recarey ordered the Presidency of the Republic of Uruguay, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the State Health Services Administration (ASSE) and the multinational company Pfizer to present all the information regarding  Covid-19 vaccines within 48 hours.

This notice was given in a case that began with the aim of suspending the application of these vaccines for children.

On Wednesday, a hearing is scheduled to be held at 9 in the morning where the representatives of all the aforementioned organizations and the company must appear, according to the TV Ciudad news program.

Among the aspects highlighted by the judge, are the contracts for the purchase of the vaccines, and if they contain clauses of civil indemnity or criminal impunity of the suppliers in the event of possible adverse effects.

They are also requested to provide “extensive detail” regarding the biochemical composition of the vaccines, how the batches were distributed, which ones contain messenger RNA and what meaning it has.

In addition, Judge Recarey wants to know about the possible “presence of graphene oxide” or “nanotechnological elements”, if the vaccines are “experimental or not” and information about “what is scientifically known about the effectiveness of those labeled as vaccines”, according to the daily El Observador.

Likewise, official figures are requested that “demonstrate the negative or positive incidence of the so-called vaccination in the number of infections and deaths with a diagnosis of Covid from the beginning of the campaign to date” and whether studies have been carried out “tending to explain the notorious increase in deaths from Covid-19 as of March 2021 in relation to the previous year”.

The judge also requested, in detail, the global average age of those who died with a diagnosis of Covid-19 and of these, how many were due to this disease.

Macron is increasingly on his own

An increasingly isolated Emmanuel Macron reshuffled his government yesterday, two weeks after the French president lost his absolute majority in the National Assembly in the elections.

According to Macron’s previous announcement, the reshuffled government will still be led by Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne, who was appointed after Macron’s victory in the presidential election in May and who will deliver her program speech in both houses of parliament on Wednesday. However, she may run into difficulties right from the start, as the far-left opposition alliance NUPES has already hinted that it will submit a motion of no confidence against her.

Macron’s coalition Ensemble won 251 seats, while the left-wing NUPES coalition, led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, obtained 135 and Marine Le Pen’s conservative National Rally boosted its parliamentary seats from eight to 88.

This is the first time since the 1980s that a French president has not obtained the ruling majority required to push through legislation with ease, throwing into jeopardy Macron’s flagship electoral policies, including his controversial pension reforms.

There were both surprises and predictable changes in the composition of the new government: Even before the National Assembly elections, Macron had indicated that those cabinet members who do not win a mandate in their districts may lose their portfolios. Accordingly, the minister of health, the head of the department responsible for the country’s environmental transition, and the state secretary responsible for maritime affairs are all leaving.

A number of French news outlets noted that it is a surprise that State Secretary for European Affairs Clément Beaune will now lead the transport ministry.

The government formation process was not without scandals either. After the presidential election, Macron appointed Damien Abad, the former faction leader of the center-right Republicans, as minister responsible for solidarity affairs, but he was forced to leave the government because proceedings were initiated against him on suspicion of attempted rape.

On the other hand, State Secretary for Development Chrysoula Zacharopoulou can keep her post. The politician, with a degree in gynecology, was accused of raping a former patient.

Macron consulted one by one with the leaders of the parties that made it into parliament, but none of them wanted to conclude a permanent government agreement. Thus, Macron’s party must seek occasional alliances in the National Assembly to pass legislative proposals, leaving Macron in a severely weakened position going into his next term.
