The EU has a poster about a conference showing a veiled woman, but does not show a kippa or a Christian symbol
In his editorial of Thursday February 10, Paul Sugy, journalist for Le Figaro, looks at the opening of the conference on the future of Europe, where a poster showing a veiled woman is causing controversy.
The poster for the conference on the future of Europe, which takes place from February 11 to 13 and is jointly organised by the three EU institutions, is part of a series of 17 images created by the EU to illustrate and promote the event. I admit that I already feel a first uneasiness in the face of this kind of campaigning: 17 posters in total, which means that old people, young people, men, women… can be seen at the same time.
Every day, political representation submits more and more to the imperative of making things equal. Following this logic, will it one day take 450 million posters for everyone to be sure that they can perfectly identify with this advertising campaign?
Surprisingly, she is the only person who is attached to a visible religious sign. Nowhere is there a kippah or a baptismal medal.
What is the message? If one had to highlight one of several religions, why Islam, which is a very small minority in the EU?
Europe is a civilisation rooted in Christian faith rather than a supranational political organisation. Or if the message is that the headscarf is a “fashion” accessory like any other, let us be clear: The authors of the campaign make themselves accomplices of an Islamist propaganda discourse, against which one would wish for more resistance on the part of the EU.
After all, the “future” in many Islamic countries is gradually coming thanks to the struggle of thousands of courageous women who risk their safety by freeing themselves from this veil. It is precisely this veil that the EU highlights when it wants to think about the future. What a signal.

Anti-Anti-Fascism: When grammar, math, and history collide

Prefix-obsessed activists have commandeered education, advancing radical ideologies as fact on young minds. The National Education Association promotes anti-racist teaching to disrupt white supremacy. The designated prefix provides perfect PR: why wouldn’t one be anti-racist? Just like anti-racism ideologues, current anti-fascists love to hide behind their label. “There is an ANTI- prefix, therefore we are against Fascism just like our grandfathers in World War II who fought against Fascism!” is a common cry attempting to debase those who dare question the intentions of anti-fascists. North Carolina State Board of Education member James Ford, a radical anti-racist, once tweetedthat being anti-anti-fascism is calling oneself a fascist, according to the “rules of grammar” (the very rules of grammar that are based in white supremacy). If one is against anti-fascism, one is fascist. The anti’s cancel out: simple math (another racist subject).
Unfortunately, the prefix strategy of “anti-fascism” becomes problematic once one studies history. Italian Cesare Lombroso, a 19th-century scientist and criminologist, influenced progressive Europeans. According to the book The Idea of Decline in Western History by Arthur Herman:
[Lombroso] inspired a fascination with the link between heredity and criminal behavior that would consume social scientists for at least half a century. …according to the Lombrosian approach, all these forms of social deviance were diseases, like epilepsy. The criminal or social deviant required treatment, not punishment. The instinct to punish the offender for his actions was itself a primitive instinct, Lombroso argued, which had no place in an enlightened civilized community.
Lombroso and his theories of criminal as predetermined biology broke from the classical theories of criminal behavior as free will. Therefore, the focus shifted from equal punishment of the crime to a focus on rehabilitation or prevention, as the criminals could not help themselves. This resulting progressive shift aligns with “restorative justice” in schools. Kids who break rules do not need standard pre-determined punishment; they need individualized treatment through social-emotional learning and healing circles. Modern-day anti-fascists espouse this take on restorative justice in schools as well as communities: social emotional learning, not school resource officers; social workers, not police.
Additionally, according to Dr. Hermann’s research:
The 1930 Fascist Legal code, with its Lombrosian stress on the ‘treatment’ and rehabilitation of the offenders was among the most admired and progressive of all of Mussolini’s reforms. In the final analysis, the criminal’s or the pervert’s behavior was not his fault.
Today’s anti-fascist or anti-racist stance on a criminal’s behavior might be modified from “not his fault” because of pre-determined biology to “not his fault” because of systemic inequities or institutionalized white supremacy. But the resulting removal of free will from the behavioral equation results in a similar conclusion that the Lombroso Positivists developed: incorporated into FascistLegal Code was focus on the criminal and rehabilitation, not the crime and punishment. Ironic — anti-fascists in education and their emphasis on restorative justice overlaps with 1930s Fascist Legal code. Would that make anti-fascists ultimately fascist in this historical context? Does having similar reforms as Mussolini cancel out the “anti” in “anti-fascist”?
Placing a superficial prefix in front of an ideology to elevate oneself to a position of virtuous defender of human rights does nothing but signal ignorance, especially when the same concepts of modern-day anti-fascists overlap with 1930s Fascist Legal Code. These terms and philosophies often overlap and can be twisted and perverted regardless of what prefix modern education ideologues attach to themselves. History is much more nuanced and complex than a simple prefix can relate. Consequently, students and teachers should not engage education from an “anti-racist” or an “anti-fascist” lens. This prefix posturing compels a narrow-minded view on history and current events that is anti-intellectual and anti-informed.
Swiss freedom convoy to Bern was indirectly successful
Hundreds of cars, trucks and mobile homes drove towards Bern this week to block the federal capital. The police prevented this protest against the Corona measures by blocking the city.
The Bern cantonal police spoke of “a total of over 200 vehicles”. No one knows how many cars, trucks and mobile homes really arrived from all over Switzerland on Monday. Bern was the destination of the various convoys.
From 4:00 pm, the numerous vehicles was supposed to arrive in Bern and block the city and especially the Bundesplatz. The various convoys from all over Switzerland coordinated their arrival using the “Zello” walkie-talkie app.
From Thun, Zug, Basel, Geneva, Zurich or western Switzerland, they rolled in at 80 km/h on the autobahns – deliberately at a leisurely pace in order to obstruct traffic.
The police were able to “prevent the blockade of Bern as much as possible” with a large contingent, as the Berner Zeitung reported: “In addition to the Bundesplatz, the emergency services also blocked bridges and access roads to the city.”
Occasionally, vehicle occupants were checked and were handed exit directions. What the police for their part recorded as a success in preventing a blockade of the city was indirectly a success for the Swiss “freedom convoys”, because the numerous barriers ultimately caused the security forces themselves to cause a huge blockade.
The result was traffic delays and traffic jams throughout the city, especially around the city center, including on public transport. According to the Berner Zeitung, Bernmobil had to divert bus routes 10 and 19 via Bärenplatz.
The demands of the peaceful convoy participants were the immediate abolition of Corona measures, cancellation of the health pass and the “illegal, unjustified state of emergency”.
Canadian truckers , who have been blockading Canada’s capital Ottawa for more than a week and have served as the models for the “freedom convoys” . The mayor of Ottawa declared a state of emergency on Sunday.
According to Germany daily Die Welt, thousands of protesters had descended on Ottawa again over the weekend, adding to the thousands who had stayed since last weekend, totally paralyzing downtown.
In the meantime, the Canadian freedom convoys and demonstrations have also spread to other Canadian cities, as Canadian media reported, including Toronto, Calgary, Quebec City and Vancouver.

Germany: Iraqi rapes 90-year-old wheelchair user in hospital
Even complaining did not help. The Dresden Regional Court sentenced Munthar L. (33) to two years and ten months in prison. He had raped a senior citizen (90 years old) in the emergency room of the Friedrichstadt hospital in Dresden.
