Truck jihad with 18 people injured: German court overturns sentence against Syrian – He can expect a more lenient sentence

In autumn 2019, a Syrian man (34) crashed a truck into several cars at an intersection in Limburg, Germany, and was sentenced to nine years in prison last year because of it. Now the Federal Supreme Court has overturned the sentence. The reason: a possible legal error.

The case must therefore now be brought to trial again. According to the presiding judge, the fact that no one died in the truck attack with 18 injured was “an exceptionally lucky coincidence”. However, the sentence is to be based on the assumption “that the Syrian insidiously grasped the defencelessness of his victims with a glance”, as the Bild newspaper writes. However, this motive could not be proven. Only the “killing with a homicidal device” was proven, which is also a characteristic of murder.

In plain language, this means that everything has to be tried again from the beginning, which is a great burden for the victims. However, the Syrian’s basic criminal conviction is not affected by this. However, his sentence could be reduced.
