The German city of Wuppertal awards its Homeland Prize 2020 to an anti-Jewish “Palestinian” friendship association

At the end of May, about 1000 supporters of the Palestine Friendship Association demonstrated in a large rally “against the oppression of Palestine”. Numerous people of Islamic faith and also Christians took part. Now the association was awarded the Homeland Prize of the city of Wuppertal.

The city of Wuppertal has awarded the Homeland Prize 2020 to the Palestinian Friendship Association Wuppertal. This was announced by the municipality at short notice.

Volker Beck, Executive Director of the Tikvah Institute gUG, is furious and in a letter to the Lord Mayor Uwe Schneidewind complains: “I consider this to be completely inappropriate. Obviously, the association considers Palestine to be oppressed even in the national territory of Israel in the 1949/67 armistice borders, although in Israel all citizens have equal rights.” This attitude is against international peace and the Jewish and democratic state. Beck therefore demands that the prize be withdrawn. The journalist Sebastian Weiermann had pointed directly on Twitter to the award ceremony and referred to the association’s call for a rally. “On a graphic with which it called for a demonstration in May, a map can be seen in which Israel is lacking.”

Now Lord Mayor Uwe Schneidewind (Greens) has also reacted to the accusations: “In view of the commitment of the association, the membership and unanimity of the jury and the timing, there is currently no reason to consider withdrawing the award.”
