Switzerland: Rejected asylum seekers have occupied a former old people’s home in Biel because their previous accommodation does not suit them. The toilets and showers, which they had never cleaned, now do not meet their standards

In the city of Biel, rejected asylum seekers have occupied a vacant former old people’s home. The left-wing newspaper Wochenzeitung (WOZ) has written a detailed report about this – and of course has adopted the arguments of the asylum seekers and their helpers, who are endowed with an innocent goodness that belongs to human rights and aid organisations.

The story in a nutshell: Because the asylum seekers are unhappy, they are to be relocated to another refugee reception centre. However, this does not suit them because they think it is too remote. They also don’t like their previous accommodation because the conditions there are allegedly inhumane. And so they have now occupied the former old people’s home.

Just to be clear: we are talking about asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected and who should actually no longer be in Switzerland. The container settlement where they have been housed so far is merely a transit station before they have to leave the country or are deported. Of course, it must be ensured that the accommodation here is also adequate.

But when the WOZ writes, based on investigation reports, that the cleanliness and hygiene of the sanitary facilities are apparently one of the reasons why the previous container settlement in Bözingen makes the residents “sick”, understanding definitely stops.

Yes, who turned toilets and showers into a degrading place – probably the rejected asylum seekers themselves.

We actually learn here from childhood that we should leave bathrooms and toilets the way we like to use them. This simple rule obviously does not work in asylum accommodation. Shower facilities and toilets can also be cleaned, or do the residents seriously expect the state to clean up their mess?

That would take the cake!
