Mila case: Six people stand trial for harassment and death threats in France

Mila will once again be confronted by her bullies. As Le Point reported on Saturday April 9, six people – men and women – will be in court in Paris on Monday and Tuesday, April 11 and 12, for posting hate messages and calls for murder on Twitter against the young woman, who has become the target of many internet users since posting a contentious video about Islam on social media. The 18-year-old will be present at the hearing, her lawyer Richard Malka told the press.

The weekly magazine reports that four women, including three mothers, had to appear before the Paris court for “bullying on the internet” and “death threats”. One of the accused should have been tried already in June, but had benefited from a procedural error.

The offending tweets had been published at the end of 2020. “This shows that Twitter is the network of hate. It is the network where hate thrives,” ruled lawyer Malka, whose statements were quoted by Le Point. According to the judge, Mila received “over 100,000 hate messages and death threats promising her to be tied up, cut, quartered, stoned and beheaded, with pictures of coffins, photo montages of beheadings [and] her bloody head”.

Some tweets, for example, suggest “smoking her”, while others want to sexually abuse her, the newspaper reports. Another internet user wants to “strangle” Mila with his “own hands”. “This has now become a sad daily routine,” said lawyer Malka.

As a reminder, the young woman became the target of an outbreak of violence after she responded to insults on social media about her sexual orientation in January 2020. This was done using a video in which she spoke vehemently about Islam. At the time of the incident, the sixteen-and-a-half-year-old student had been forced to leave her school. Since then, she has been living under police protection. Mila, who demands the right to blaspheme, was again the victim of violence on November 14, 2020, after she published a second contentious video, as reported by Le Point. In it, she had addressed the following to her critics: “And one more thing: Please watch your buddy Allah. Because my fingers are still in his asshole, I haven’t pulled them out yet”.
