“It took more than 300 dead victims of terrorism” for the French elites to open their eyes: A former intelligence chief warns against Salafism

He denounces the political strategy of “calming the waters” in the face of Islamism. In the newspaper Le Figaro of Friday February 4, the former head of the secret service DGSE, Alain Chouet, author of the book “Sept pas vers l’enfer” (Seven steps towards hell), writes that Salafism plays a decisive role in Islamist terrorism. He judges that the followers of this movement have managed to “present themselves as victims” by benefiting from the “Islamo-beatnik” lines of the left in the 1980s and later of the Republicans, who feared accusations of Islamophobia.

“They all exhaust themselves in being of service to the agitators, whose replacements are infinitely renewable,” notes Alain Chouet. In his opinion, the real danger is not Islam but Salafism. “You have to point the finger at the enemy, especially at the money that allows them to spread their separatist message,” he explains. He points to the problem of support for Salafism from the rich petromonarchies, Arabia being the first. “There is much to be done, in the media and politically, to denounce the Salafism of the Wahhabis, the Muslim Brotherhood and all those who in any way promote an Islam that is incompatible with modernity and democracy,” the author told Le Figaro newspaper.

He regrets, however, that it took “more than 300 dead terror victims for the entire French political and intellectual elite to finally admit – sometimes with great reluctance – that there is a problem”.
