Pictures of a woman wearing a strict Islamic veil in the festive halls of Oxford have been circulating on social media recently. She is said to have been awarded her Master’s degree at the elite British university – the first woman to wear a niqab. Islamic websites celebrate the woman as an “inspiration”.

In the pictures, the woman is wearing the niqab, a face veil – forbidden in Austria – and black gloves, so that everything on her body is covered except for her eyes. In strict Islamic circles, this is considered appropriate clothing for devout women. As stated on social media by Islamic sites, there has never been anything like this in the 900-year history of the British elite university: A woman wearing a niqab being awarded a Master’s degree at Oxford. The Pakistani woman is said to have graduated in “Civil Law”.

The pictures were originally posted by a Facebook page called “Surviving Hijab”. The page features covered women who are successful “despite Islamophobia and hostility”. “Surviving Hijab” goes on to write that the lady is proof that one can be successful in both the “secular” and Islamic religious worlds without “compromising.” There is nothing to be found on the Oxford University page.

Pictures of Islam converts are also frequently posted on the site: These women have finally found the “true path to Allah”.
