Imam enslaves his wife bought in Morocco in Italy: “This is our culture”

He took away all freedom from his wife by restricting her to stay in the house: She was not allowed to go out with her friends or wear western clothes, and when she had guests, she was not allowed to sit at the table with the others, but had to eat in a separate room. She couldn’t even decide what to watch on TV or what to prepare for dinner. When she tried to rebel, she was beaten and insulted by her husband. Now the man, a 40-year-old Moroccan imam who is very attached to the ancient customs of his country, has been sentenced in Italy to two years and three months in prison. For the judges, his behaviour constitutes the offence of ill-treatment in the family.

Prosecutor Barbara Badellino had asked for a sentence of two years: In the indictment, she had stressed that it was a “case in which the cultural and religious aspect plays a predominant role”. We are confronted with behaviour that may seem normal in Arab culture, but not in our country. In short, the judge said, it was a case of “conduct relevant to criminal law”. The Moroccan, who is being defended by lawyer Federico Schettini, is accused of abusing his wife and children, especially the eldest child, aged 11, who is said to have been beaten several times. The victim, now 47, was 30 years old when her family “arranged” her marriage to the accused: The wedding took place in Morocco in 2005, then the couple moved to Italy. In the courtroom, the woman described the deprivations, humiliations and insults she had suffered during her marriage.

Then the prosecutor pointed out that “she had no say, was not given autonomy and was forced to wear shapeless clothes and a veil. Her husband always imposed his will and beat her with slaps and punches”. During the trial, several witnesses, mostly friends of the accused, tried to play down the situation by describing the archaic customs of their country. VoxNews
