Redal R. (28) stammered these words when he was arrested on December 14, 2020. Shortly before, the Iraqi had abruptly rammed a knife several times into the back and upper body of a fellow countryman on the street Eisenbahnstraße in Leipzig.
He has been on trial at the Regional Court since Friday. The prosecution accuses him of attempted murder.
The prosecutor stated: “Already before, R. had attacked with a knife a man in whose family he had been staying for months”. While this attack turned out to be not serious, the attack four days later was life-threatening.
His defence lawyer read out a statement at the start of the trial, according to which his client was mentally ill. Whether this is actually the case must be assessed by an expert witness during the trial.
