The apparently mentally ill perpetrator was presumably bothered by the fact that the woman was gardening. Investigators are now also looking into an Islamist motive.
A 29-year-old man allegedly stabbed a 58-year-old woman several times in the neck in a green area in Berlin. The landscape gardener was seriously injured, according to the police. The suspect, who has Afghan nationality, allegedly took offence at the fact that the victim was a woman. According to the current state of the investigation, a mental illness may have played a role in the crime, as the officials explain. A 66-year-old man who rushed to help was also stabbed in the neck by the 29-year-old.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the State Security of the State Criminal Police Office are investigating the details of the crime and its background – also from the perspective of a possibly Islamist-motivated attack. The police arrested the suspect at the scene of the crime. He has been in Germany since 2016.
According to the police, the attack happened on Saturday afternoon in the Wilmersdorf district. Both victims were treated in hospital. The suspect is to be brought before an investigating judge later today.
