Germany: About 100 left-wing extremists attack mosque

A mosque in Leipzig was attacked on Monday evening. Four windows were smashed, a police spokesperson said. According to public broadcaster “Deutschlandfunk”, the place of worship belongs to the mosque association Ditib, which is subordinate to the Turkish religious authority Diyanet.

According to initial information, the mosque had been damaged in connection with a rally of about 100 masked people, whom the police classify as a left-wing motivated group.

Along the nearby the street Eisenbahnstraße in the Volkmarsdorf district, the group would also have set fire to rubbish bins. The police took eleven people into custody. No further information was initially released.

On Monday evening, according to the Leipziger Zeitung, about 200 people from the left-wing spectrum had gathered for a demonstration against police violence in the east of Leipzig. There had been several incidents of damage to property.
