The blood has dried, the scars have healed. But deep inside the heart the injury is still felt. Joachim Schönfeldt still cannot believe that he was beaten up by a teenager. During his visit to the editorial office, the 77-year-old tells us that on the day in question he was standing at the bus stop in the Straße des Friedens. The man from Prenzlau wanted to go to his doctor on Georg-Dreke-Ring. But that did not come to pass on the afternoon of April 5. Shortly after 2 p.m. he was hit in the face, according to the police report – by a 15-year-old boy who was at the scene with his 34-year-old mother.
According to the long-time production manager of the compound feed plant, this was preceded by his request to a waiting woman to please let him with his walker to the door of the bus: “This woman was deeply veiled and I didn’t know if she understood me at all. So I asked again louder for her to step aside because I can’t get on somewhere else.” What happened next, the pensioner doesn’t even remember exactly. Seconds later, he suddenly found himself covered in blood on the footpath. Joachim Schönfeldt suspects that a young man standing nearby overheard the conversation and subsequently beat him up. “I was suddenly lying on the ground, bleeding badly from my mouth and nose,” the man from the district town remembers.
He also lost a tooth during the attack, which was knocked out, the victim of the beating adds quietly. Joachim Schönfeldt turned to the newspaper Uckermark Kurier to thank the people who came to his aid in this difficult situation. According to his recollection, they were young people of high school age: “They were quite concerned and got out handkerchiefs to stop my bleeding. I know that such a thing is not self-evident. But I was in such a bad way that I couldn’t even thank them. I’d like to do that now.”
The ambulance service was also on the spot quickly that day, praises the senior citizen. Due to his severe disability, he is handicapped in everyday life anyway, says Joachim Schönfeldt. But this attack showed him once again how vulnerable old people are: “Before I retired, I worked for a few years as a security guard in the West and had to deal with such things. But you don’t expect it to happen to you. It’s really bitter.
Asked if he had perhaps provoked the attack himself by making a xenophobic statement, the father of a family raises his hands in horror. No, he had not, but he knew that the other party had hired a lawyer. “I guess there is a complaint against me. I am waiting for the police investigation, but I am confident. After all, there were enough witnesses who saw what happened there and what happened to me. The truth will prevail in the end.”
The police commented, “As the injured party, the man is a witness in criminal proceedings. The criminal police will hear the injured party separately in the proceedings. Since his data has been collected, the criminal investigators will approach the man in the form of a questionnaire or a summons to appear as a witness. The task of the police in criminal proceedings is to conduct investigations and collect evidence. Charges can only be brought by the public prosecutor.”
