France: Mother who converted to Islam convicted for justifying terrorism

From September to November 2020, the 31-year-old woman from Sens ( Yonne département ) posted and commented several videos on various social networks. In particular, one in which she supports the murderer of the teacher Samuel Paty: “Bravo, you have done what many did not dare to do. Allahu Akbar”. She posted other videos, including one from Idlib, the headquarters of Al-Qaeda in Syria, and another about anti-French demonstrations around the world, the newspaper France Bleu explains. The young woman is annoyed by “the social pressure on Islam exerted by the media”. But she immediately adds: “Since then, I have changed my way of thinking. I sincerely regret these publications (…). I say today that the murder of Samuel Paty is inhumane and I am appalled for having published it”.The mother of three, who has been unemployed for nine years, explains that she converted to Islam over the internet in 2015, shortly after meeting her former partner, who was listed on the S-list for Islamist dangerous persons. She also says she left him when he asked her to go to Syria.

To justify her hateful publications against France, the accused said she was “depressed” at the time and “did not take her therapy well”, France Bleu reports. Despite her age, she has already been convicted five times, mostly for theft. She says she is a kleptomaniac and was also convicted of violence against minors. She had also failed to comply with court orders, which led to her being remanded in custody for a week. She was eventually sentenced to six months with an electronic ankle bracelet as well as a one-year suspended sentence if she does not comply with her psychological treatment obligation and her work obligation. She will also not be registered in the terrorist offenders’ file.
