France: Homophobic Muslim candidate of the communists causes controversy in the camp of the far left

The parliamentary elections are just around the corner and are already causing quite a few disputes. As reported by La Voix du Nord, David Guiraud, the Insoumis candidate, will run in the 8th constituency of Roubaix, with Shéhérazade Bentorki as his deputy. A connection sharply criticised by Republican Spring leader Amine El-Khatmi: “After the racist candidate in Vénissieux, the Union Populaire proposes the homophobic deputy in Roubaix,” he posted on Twitter, linking the campaign poster of La France Insoumise (Communists, editor’s note).

With his remarks, Amine El-Khatmi referred in particular to Shéhérazade Bentorki’s position in 2013, when she, then an elected MP in Tourcoing, had announced that she was leaving the Socialist Party to speak out against marriage for all. David Guiraud announced his intention to file a lawsuit against the Republican Spring leader: “There will be a judicial response, because if we are not respected, we will be trampled on in the future”, Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s youth spokesperson told the newspaper “La Voix du Nord”. The latter also clarified that it was possible “to be against marriage for all in 2013 without being homophobic” in order to rush to the aid of his deputy. For her part, Shéhérazade Bentorki had claimed in March that she had “mixed everything up a bit, between (her) personal convictions and this debate, which was badly conducted at the time”. Today, she claims that she has “no more ambiguities on the subject” and has even changed her mind on same-sex marriage.
