Ex-jihadist Karim Ouagueni arrested in Germany: “I had hoped to be able to return to Algeria more easily from Germany”

Karim Ouagueni has been kept under intelligence services’ surveillance since he defected to the ranks of the Islamic State in Syria in 2013. Because he was under house arrest, he was tracked down by the Directorate General for Internal Security (DGSI) in Germany. He was extradited to France and sentenced to six months in prison without parole immediately on Thursday February 17.

“I am of the opinion that I did not break the law,” the accused asserts from the booth where he appears in court as a prisoner. He says he came to Germany because relations between Germany and Algeria (his country of origin) were better than those between France and Algeria. “I had hoped to be able to return to Algeria more easily. Because in France, the consulate tells me that my residence permit is not granted and they can’t issue me a residence permit.”

And this is why, if he is representing himself legally, it is because he has refused to consult a lawyer. “My religion forbids me to do that,” assures the defendant of Muslim faith.
