Champions League Final in France: “It was racism against Europeans committed by North African migrants”

Stade de France: of the 129 people apprehended and arrested, only 16 were British and 1 Spanish. All the others, the vast majority, are “natives”, new French citizens or illegal immigrants.

Julia Vigas, wife of Thiago Alcántara, was caught up in the chaos that erupted outside the Stade de France before the Champions League final and shared her experience and those of other relatives of Liverpool players on social media:

“I don’t like to comment on things like this but this time I have to. The final was an absolute nightmare and it’s not about football because what happened goes way beyond the result. Because of the lack of organisation and security, we suffered many fearful moments. We were constantly threatened by gangs of thieves who tried to rob us and sneak into the stadium without tickets. For this reason, many fans stayed outside the stadium. The police shot tear gas at families and fans, some of them were even beaten up. They were all innocent. For this reason, we had to be escorted for our own safety. Something has to be done, something like this should not happen at any event, and we demand that someone takes responsibility. It could have been much worse.”

Officers on the scene then witnessed repeated and unprecedented acts of theft without being able to intervene as there were numerous. Homegrown crime was also present, but by no means dominant. One thing was certain: pickpockets came in large numbers to steal cash, wallets or phones, sometimes even from the visually impaired or wheelchair users. According to them, there were so many flagrant thefts that they could not arrest them all. So they collected the phones and returned them when they were able. They also witnessed a blind man and a man in a wheelchair whose personal belongings had been stolen”.

The vast majority of police detentions were classified without follow-up. In response to a request from TF1info, the Bobigny prosecutor’s office said on Monday that 48 police arrests were made in its jurisdiction on Saturday night and that a significant number of the police arrests involved minors. “The vast majority were dismissed – perpetrators unknown or proceedings not in order – and not a single custody case against minors resulted in a conviction.

A Spanish MP (Vox) said:

“I repeat here what an acquaintance told me, who always tells me that we tend to criminalise immigration too much: “What I experienced today in Paris made me think differently from Vox. We were attacked by gangs of Arab thieves. The police did nothing. Indescribable. They attacked us twice. We are fine, but traumatised. On the way in and out. With 9- and 5-year-old children. They ruined our party.”

A fan present at the Stade de France:

“I am an immigrant in Spain and have always been pro-immigration, but what we witnessed last night in Paris was a horror for our family and all the fans. Hundreds of African Parisians attacked the fans and taunted us because they saw us panicking. It was racism, against Europeans.”

Fans present and AFP journalists also noted before the match that gangs of youths and unidentified local football fans were trying to get into the stadium without tickets.

“I have been to many Champions League, European Cup and World Cup finals. I have never witnessed anything like what was happening at the Stade de France. There are groups of French people around the stadium attacking and stealing from the fans. I’m not talking from hearsay, I’ve witnessed it for myself,” says Spanish journalist Sergio Santos.
