BREAKING: Islamist terrorist attack on Intercity train foiled in Germany

Police officers arrested a 17-year-old man at Hanover central station on Saturday. He is suspected of having contemplated an Islamist attack.

The 17-year-old is said to have been “instructed by others in skills for committing an Islamist-motivated attack”, as a spokesperson for the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office told state broadcaster NDR in Lower Saxony in writing. However, there is said to have been no concrete preparation for an attack. The 17-year-old is currently in police custody and is to be brought before a magistrate. According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, his mobile phone and computer are currently being investigated.

On Saturday, the State Security Service in Cologne had assumed a possible dangerous situation in Hanover based on information from the 17-year-old’s private surroundings. At 5 p.m., investigators tracked down the suspect at the main railway station. Because the 17-year-old had been in a toilet in an Intercity shortly before, officers stopped the train near Wunstorf and searched it for explosives with sniffer dogs. The train, with around 100 passengers on board, was allowed to continue its journey after an hour.
