Belgium: One of the 6 repatriated Islamic State (IS) brides is at large again – prosecution speaks of “misunderstanding”

Contrary to the Minister of Justice’s claim last week, a woman repatriated to Belgium from Syria is at large in the country.
The six women who were repatriated to Belgium from Syria are still deprived of their liberty, Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne confirmed to the Chamber last week. One of them has been at large since October, De Morgen reported on Tuesday.

34-year-old S.A. had travelled to Syria in 2015, a year after the terrorist group Islamic State had proclaimed a caliphate there. After returning to Belgium, she was imprisoned, having been sentenced in absentia to five years’ imprisonment. She appealed this decision and in mid-October the court reduced her sentence to three years’ probation, after which she was conditionally released.

When Minister Van Quickenborne was questioned by an MP in plenary last week, he therefore appeared to have been inadequately briefed by the prosecution, the Attorney General’s Office argues. “Our documents were not up to date, so it was a mistake,” the prosecution spokesperson commented. The minister did not want to respond. www.lesoir.be
