Austria: Viennese police try to cover up the rape of a young woman by a Syrian asylum seeker and the public prosecutor charges the victim with assault because she fought back

In the case of an attempted rape, the Vienna Freedom Party (FPÖ) has criticised the information policy of the police and accused them of political calculation. “After several cases of politically motivated withholding of information on incidents, the Vienna provincial police directorate has a serious need for explanation,” said the provincial party chairman of the Vienna FPÖ, Dominik Nepp, to the weekly JUNGE FREIHEIT on Monday. “While a press release is made about every small violation of the mask ordinance at anti-government demonstrations,” there had been an attempt to conceal the attack of an asylum seeker on a young woman.

At the end of last week, for example, the police in the Austrian capital had only reported that a Syrian asylum seeker had tried to rape a 22-year-old woman when asked by the newspaper Kronen-Zeitung. However, the woman fought back with a knife and seriously injured the attacker.

Police located the man near the scene of the crime and arrested him after his injuries were treated at a hospital. At the time of the assault, the Syrian man, who was known to the police, had been intoxicated and was also in possession of drugs.

The public prosecutor’s office in charge reported the victim of the assault for bodily harm. In an interview with the newspaper, the woman’s lawyer described this as an “absolutely insensitive approach”.

In Austria, the murder of a 13-year-old girl had made headlines and caused consternation last year. The teenager had been drugged, raped and killed by several Afghans. This sparked a discussion in the country about how to deal with criminal asylum seekers.
