5 dead women in 100 days: The bloody record of Somali asylum seekers in German-speaking countries – Islam also to blame for the crimes

After the bloodbath in Vienna’s Favoriten district: The outcome of knife and violence attacks committed by Somalis in the past months in Austria and its neighbouring countries is devastating. In the last seven days alone, there have been several attacks on women and children. Five women died as a result of attacks committed by two Somalis in Würzburg and Vienna this summer. At least 14 people, including several children, were seriously injured.

At the moment, the entire country of Austria is shocked by the brutal crime of a 28-year-old Somali asylum seeker who allegedly killed the mother of his daughter and her friend with a kitchen knife and a rolling pin in the most brutal way on Monday night.

Just last Saturday, a 26-year-old Somali ran amok on a public bus in the popular northern Italian town of Rimini, stabbing five people. He critically injured a young boy with a knife.
Also on Saturday, a Somali man in Innsbruck wounded a fellow countryman with a knife; he too was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In Germany, a horrific attack in Würzburg shocked the whole of Europe at the end of June – in a department store, a 24-year-old Somali killed three women aged 24, 49 and 82. He also inflicted life-threatening injuries on three women aged 52, 39 and 73. An eleven-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy also struggled to survive after severe knife attacks to the neck and chest. All signs point to an Islamist background to the crime, but the German investigators have not yet made any concrete statements. The mayor of the city of Würzburg even spoke in a letter about the need to be even more open and tolerant, justifying: “Because, how would you feel as a foreigner?” The 24-year-old offender with a criminal record has meanwhile been hospitalised in a psychiatric ward.

In Hanau, a Somali man was sentenced to life imprisonment just last week for stabbing an Afghan asylum seeker with a knife in a dispute over a shower left dirty at the beginning of the year. The attacks do not always end fatally: only at the end of July, a Somali could be stopped at the last moment in Frankfurt. Armed with two knives, he attacked an unknown 65-year-old pensioner. However, the latter was able to defend himself in time with pepper spray. A week earlier, a Somali man in Hesse stabbed his wife and neighbours with a knife – when he ran towards the police officers with the murder weapon, he was killed by five shots fired by a police officer.

Again and again there are confrontations and attacks by Somali asylum seekers in public transport in German-speaking countries. In January, a Somali man beat up an 83-year-old pensioner in the Berlin suburban railway and stole her handbag. In Basel, several asylum seekers were seriously injured in an altercation at the end of last year.

Especially concerning violent crime and violence against women, but also concerning Islamism, Somali asylum seekers and migrants keep investigators busy. According to the Somali journalist Hassan Abukar, the Salafist-Islamist movement is very popular in Somalia. The Salafists coming here “generally have no interest in integration or assimilation”, the journalist said. The children, it is said from circles in the community, are brought up in a strict Islamic way. In Vienna, 2 to 3 year old toddlers are repeatedly seen wearing headscarves. The fact that this is not allowed in Austria does not seem to play a role in the values of many Somalis. The exit from the Somali community is almost insurmountable for young women, hardly any of them manage to escape the Islamic and cultural coercion. One of the few women to leave is the women’s rights activist and author Ayaan Hirsi. In her opinion, Islam is the “greatest threat to women’s rights in Europe”. She lives under constant personal protection.

The circumcision of little girls is also still practised, more than one million small children fall victim to this terrible genital mutilation – several tens of thousands of children are also said to be at risk of it in Austria and Germany. 98 percent of girls and women between the ages of 15 and 49 are genitally mutilated there. Criminal charges are rarely brought in Austria, and secrecy prevails in the communities.
